Gordon Alister Stuart (Monty) Andrews 1886 - 1923
| Gordon or ‘Monty’ as he was known was the son of William and Margaret Andrews nee Marshall and was born at Singleton, but was educated in the Branxton area. He married Jane McNulty at Singleton in 1909 and they had 4 sons and 1 daughter. Gordon was a well known footballer in the Coalfields. Gordon’s untimely death at the age of 37 years was recorded in the Singleton Argus on the 25th September 1923 and reads as follows : Mr Gordon “Monty” Andrews a well known resident of Cessnock died suddenly on Saturday afternoon (22 Sept.1923) after having taken part in a football match at Cessnock Sportsground. Thornton and Cessnock were engaged in a benefit match for the Bellbird Fund (Mine Disaster) and as Thornton’s team was not complete,the deceased took part in the match to assist the players. At the end of the game he was seen to go down and was found to be in a bad state.He was hurried in a motor vehicle to a doctor,who on examination pronounced life extinct. He had been treated for heart trouble for some months and during the afternoon had said he was not too well. He is survived by his wife and five children. |
