Arthur James Andrews 1893 - 1984

Arthur was born at West Maitland the son of James and Ellen Andrews nee Kermode in 1893 and in 1917 married Ruby Tudor at the Wesleyan Church Singleton. Arthur and Ruby had a dairy farm at Greenlands via Singleton where they both milked their herd of cows. Each had their own bail for milking. In the early 1950’s a new dairy and bails were built by Reg Andrews a cousin of Arthur. Reg tells the story of Arthur trying to get the cows into the new bails and they refused to go in and Arthur reckoned it was because the exit gate at the front of the bails was fully enclosed and not of an open type like the old bails. Arthur then bored a one inch diameter hole in the door so the cows could see out and the story goes that the cows then went into the bails because they could see out the hole and no further trouble was experienced in bailing up the cows. The same slab cottage in which Arthur and Ruby lived all their lives and the dairy and bails are still in the original condition and are lovingly preserved and cared for by Shirley and Mick Comino who now own the property. Arthur and Ruby did not have any children of their own,but a cousin of Arthur, Linder Andrews died leaving a young wife,Florence, and five children, Dorothy,Shirley,Bruce,Kathleen and Kevin. Arthur and Ruby played a big part in caring for this family after the death of Linder and Shirley Comino nee Andrews spent many happy years with them as did other members of the family.Arthur remembered sitting beside his grandfather,George Andrews, and they were watching the sunset and George said to Arthur,"I wonder how many more sunsets I will get to see?"This was on Monday evening and George died the next day. Ruby died in 1981 and Arthur died in 1984 and the property was left to Shirley. A new home has been built adjacent to the original cottage and the old slab home with all its furnishings intact is still in the same condition as when Ruby and Arthur lived in it.
