Edith Clara “Nancy” Barber & Edwards nee Shearer (1896 - 1980)

Edith spent the first eight years of her life in the north-western part of NSW. The Shearer family moved to Tantawangalo,near Bega about 1904. Edith attended the Tantawangalo Primary School. At the age of 14 years she went to work for Mr & Mrs Whitehead, at Nungatta Station and stayed there until she married Richard Barber. Edith and Richard moved to Cambalong Station where Richard was employed as a Station-hand Teamster. He carted wool to Eden and brought back supplies for the Station. Richard met with an early death when he was gored by a bull and died a week later at the age of 38 years,leaving a wife and young family. Edith and her family moved to Bega in 1934 and lived with her mother Mary Jane Shearer. Edith worked at the Central Hotel,Bega until her second marriage in 1945 to Walter Alfred Leslie Edwards.She was a keen gardener and enjoyed hand crafts,many of which she gave to her family.Edith was given a surprise 80th Birthday party at the home of her son in Bega and she died at the age of 84 years on the 23 rd August 1980.
