Alice and her sister,Charlotte were very close and always spent a lot of time together at Alice’s terrace house at Paddington. On this particular day Charlotte had been visiting Alice and Alice was in the garden and commenting on the beautiful flowers and in particular, this carnation which in a few days time would be a magnificent bloom. Alice commented ‘that I’ll have that when it comes out’. Alice died a day later and Charlotte and Effie picked the carnation and placed it in the coffin with Alice.
