Hi, my name is Mike and I have Andrews blood on my mother's side of my
familey. I am researching the Andrews name and I found out it was scottish.
I went to www.houseofnames.com and that said it was first found in Caithness
scotland and is a sept of the clan Ross. I then found out that we are
actually McGregors but johnathan McGregor changed his name to Jonathan
Andrews because he was being chaced for stealing sheep. Your website is very
intresting. I would love to hear from you.

Cheers!

Hi Mike and apologies for not replying sooner.
All I can say is that this story has been handed down through generations
of the same Andrews family that came from Bishopstone, via Salisbury in
England that an Andrew McGregor came from Rannock Moor, just south east of
Glencoe in the highlands of Scotland. He was accused of sheep stealing and
was pursued by irate farmers into the south of England, possibly on
horseback where he managed to evade his pursuers, finally disappearing some
where near Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. Later Andrew changed his name to
Jonathan Andrews and on the 30 March 1771 married Jane Rook of the Parish of
Downton, in the Parish Church of St. Laurence, Downton, Wiltshire. Obviously
none of this can be proved (at the moment).
One of Jonathon and Janes sons (Abraham) migrated to Australia in 1838 and
here I am.

Hi
Jonathon Andrews/Andrew McGregor is my 6g grandfather
Peter Andrews is my 5g grandfather

I was wondering if there has been any further work done on the McGregor lineage? or is this impossible due to the outlawing of the name?

Your site is brilliant --really really interesting.
Thank you for making public what must have been a huge amount of work in a really informative and accessible way.

Do you know if Andrews was a really common name in and around Bishopstone as I note that there are marriages in Bishopstone for a Leah Andrews to a William Dawkins in 1805 and Elizabeth (betty?) Andrews to a Thomas Dawkins in 1807?
(Free and complete transcripts of the Bishopstone Registers can be found on the Moonrakers site in a searchable spreadsheet format.)

Cheers
