My name is Joseph William Andrews. I am a Fiji citizen presently working on
the island of Niue. I was browsing the web and came upon your site and
found it very interesting to see a link of a Andrews Family in Scotland. My
family history goes that the first Andrews that came to Fiji ( early 1800's)
was named Brent Andrews. He was a whaler on a ship that sunk off the
harbour in the Suva. Brent managed to swim ashore and decided to stay in
Fiji. He bought land after doing a favor for the King of the province of
Cakaudrove. The favor was to steal a woman from the island of Lau. After
successly carrying out the favor the king gave Brent the lands that our
family presently live on (approx 500 acres). The family resident is still
there today made of oregon pine. We have first names such as Florence, Joe,
Joseph, John, Steven, Albert, Martha, Philip, William, Percy, Jonathan,
Jane, Peter, Sarah, Charlotte, Maryann, Walker, Charlie, Jack and also Roy.
There are about 300 of us here in Fiji.
I am writing to you to see if the Andrews family of Fiji belong to the same
Your assistance in this matter is very much appreciated.

My name is Ruth (Andrews) Joiner. My Andrews come from Northern Newfoundland , Canada. There is a lot of your names that is also in my family. Henry , William,Joseph, Charlotte , Sarah, Martha, James, Charles and Roy. And then my grandfather was named Archibald that one really has me stuck. But I can't find out where my Andrews are connected to any where. They just appeared and they are disappearing as fast. They don't seem to be any connection with other Andrews on the Island.

I found your post after hearing from another message board that my g-g-grandmother Maria Andrews, who married Mathew Riley in the 1850s in Fiji, was the daughter of Brent Andrews, the first Andrews in Fiji. I was thrilled to read your story of how Brent arrived in Fiji and how he married. Do you know where he came from? Maria is a mystery to me, as are the early Rileys, and I would appreciate any information you can give me on either of these families. I can give you the descendants of Maria and Mathew in return. I am living in Sydney. I only found out about Maria when I found their son David Riley's death registration in the LDS films, which quoted her as the mother. There is so little information on these early Europeans and part-European Fijians! Thank you so much, Carole

Where your family from in Fiji? There is only one Andrews family and they come from Savusavu. I do not know any Ratu Jacob. The title is a title only going to chiefly people. Does your grandfather have any evidence that he is a Ratu? Does his birth certificate hold the title Ratu? Does any official document from the Native Land Trust Board in Fiji have his name as Ratu Jacob? Is there any official document to say that he is Ratu? Does the Fijian Affairs have record of him as Ratu? Or has he just told you. It is funny if you say Ratu Jacob Andrews it sound not Fijian. Next time ask your grandfather to show you some evidence.

Bula to Uncle Joey and Cousin Luke. Luke loloma to Nana and Pa from Doll, Peter and Katalina. HAHA! Well, well, well... stirring trouble are we "Raju Singh" Andrews??? I am the Granddaughter of Esther Andrews, who is the sister of Jacob Andrews, and WE do not have any Raju Singh Andrews in our family. Yes our family lived in Kasauva, Savusavu, as that was where the land was they were given by a chief from Cakaudrove. Maybe Raju, before you decide to pick on a young person such as Luke, you think about what youre saying. Uncle Jack may not be a "ratu" as such, and his 11 brothers and sisters may not be registered in any Fijian Fijian Affairs or Native Land Trust Board registry's or anything but they are definitely of chiefly blood ties.

I went through the family tree you compiled and I take my hat off to you for all the information, research and time spent collating so much information.
I am just a bit unsure of the birthplace you have of Jacob Andrews I. I need to clarify whether he was actually born in West Indies or in Levuka Fiji and would appreciate if you could share your source of this information with me. My e-mail address is email@example.com.
My name is Ann Andrews-Pesamino, I am one of Brent Andrews g-g-g children.
I look forward to hearing from you.

To my cousins extended family and others who take interest in this site. My name is Donna Marie Andrews born in Auckland New Zealand on the 21 January 1958 at St Helens Hospital. My Fijian name is Ro Andi Donna.I am the third child of Joe Walter Phillip Andrews born in Samoa and Rita (nee) Fox of New Zealand. My father is the eldest son of Phillip Tui Andrews of Savusavu and mother Rebecca Soialo of Samoa. They travelled to Fiji with all of their children at the time and settled on the family land which as mentioned by others was given to our great, great, grandfather Brent Andrews and is still the family land today. My father was born in Samoa moved with his family to Fiji and left Fiji when he was 19 years of age for New Zealand where he still lives today. Both of his parents were decendants of Paramount Chiefs. I can confirm our grandparents lineage as some 30 years ago I went to the village of our family, Boramasagna,Fiji (excuse if the spelling is incorrect)where I was met by the Chief in residence at the time. I underwent a ceremony where my immediate family (brothers and sisters- Doris Esther, Stephen Anthony, Phillip Thomas Joe, Deborah Phyllis and our children at the time)were established as having the right of lineage and their names added to the village records. I took this trip with Uncle Jack (Jacob Andrews) and with Aunty Easter. I will always be grateful to them for what turned out to be a truly memorable, spiritual, and enlightening visit one I hope to take again. While there I was taken to the meeting house and shown through a door which can only be entered by those who have the ranking of my family. Another door, the main door can only be entered by the Chief at the time. There were other enterances which according to ones ranking could be entered. Once inside I was shown the carvings and taught some of the stories and teachings. ie Sharks are believed to protect us. A theory I am unwilling to put to the test. There were many types of sea life we are not permitted to eat. Uncle Jack has extensively researched the stories and a lot of the history of our family. His brothers and sisters also hold many of the passed down stories and history that can help us to understand who we are and our connections to others. This is the Pacific way that the history is told through the stories and in more recent times by historical accounts the records/archives.It is good to piece this altogether so we are all clear of our history. Hope my entry assists with this endeavour.

Brent Andrews from Scotland married my great (x3) grandmother Ro Salanieta (of Burebasaga village, Rewa) in the early 1800s. They moved to Levuka and then onto Kasavu, Savusavu, where they settled and where the Andrews family still reside today. Their two children were Jacob Andrews (married Hanna) and Maria Andrews (married Matthew Riley). Jacob Andrews' son was Walter whose son was Philip Tui Andrews....and the line goes on. firstname.lastname@example.org
