Hi!

I've just subscribed. Is anyone researching the
surname Drake from Devon,England from 1500-1700?

My cousin participated in the Drake DNA Project. The
results say we are connected to Captain Francis Drake
who migrated to the New World in the 1600's to what is
now New Hampshire. He eventually moved to New Jersey.
We are now trying to "cross the pond" to England. Is
Captain Francis Drake related to Sir Francis Drake &
the Drake's of Ashe or not? We believe he is but don't
have proof yet. How are Henry Drake & Sir Francis
Champernowne related to Captain Drake? I found where
Henry Drake married Anna Champernowne widow of Sir
Arthur Champernowne. I have lots of questions.

I also am a member of the Drake Mail List on Rootsweb.

Thanks for any help you can give me in figuring out
this Drake family in Devon.

Sincerely,

Pam Drake from Indiana,USA

I and many others have been researching the Drake family for a long time, I am aware of the DNA project and am in communication with most of the researchers of the various groups

One person who does think that the Drakes of Ashe and Drakes of Tailstock are of the same family is Dr Charles I. Drake of Georgia, USA who published the results of his research in the genealogist magazine 2001.

His theories are very interesting but flawed as he had not considered the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1331. There are also The Crown Pleas of the Devon Eyre 1238 that contain important information of Tailstock Abbey

In short if there is a connection between these two families it was before 1200 and if anyone wants to research medieval documentation for proof I take my hat off to them.

My ggg-grandfather, John Sutton of Sussex County, New Jersey had a sister
Prudence, b.1790, who married an Ebenezer Drake in 1813 in New Jersey. If
he is connected to your Drakes, that would be an interesting circle because
the families I am researching in Devon are usually ancestors of my mother
(Chick, Pengilly).
My parents' families both ended up in the area of London, Ontario, Canada.

Has anyone done any research on John Drake & his wife
either Jane? or Katherine?(seen both names) who lived
in Topsham in the early 1600's? I understand they had

Hi!

I'm researching the Drake's of Devon in the 1500-1600's as they relate to Captain(not Sir) Francis Drake born circa 1615 who migrated to New Hampshire in the 1600's.He then moved to Piscataway,Middlesex County,New Jersey. He married Mary Walker circa 1650 in Portsmouth,New Hampshire. He died 24 Sept.1687 in Piscataway. They had at least three children: George,Elizabeth & John. Who were his parents in Devon?

Thanks!

Hi Pam,

Devon is a pretty big place. Unless you have some idea of where your
Francis DRAKE was born it will be a time-consuming process of going through
all the parishes of Devon to find him. DRAKE is also a common name in
Devon.

I think you should start by checking out what is online at the LDS
(familysearch.org). You may be able to eliminate some of the Francis's
listed. The rest will have to put into families to find parents and
siblings looking for naming patterns that run in your DRAKE family.

Best of luck with your research.

I have traced my Drakes to Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England. My last one that I can trace is Francis Drake ( I have 4 of them) he was born at the end of the 1700's and was a woolcomber. Is anyone doing this line?
