Subject: [DEV] Drake

Thomas John Drake born 12 Sept. 1814 and his wife Ceres Selina (nee Walters)
sailed to NZ> but they were from Deptford Kent,.. but according to the book
I have in front of me, in case anyone is looking for another DRAKE he was
the eldest son of Capt. John Drake of East India Company and belonged to an
old English family from Devonshire. and were descended from one John Drake a
brother to Sir Francis Drake, T. J. Drake was educated at Eton and worked in
a London bank. before coming to NZ.

They settled at Eltham, which is Taranaki. but here at Carterton we had a
few Drake folk... I can list the children if required, if it will assist
anyone, am taking this out of one of our trusted books.. Tawa Flat and Old
Porirua Road by Carman..

Subject: [DEV] Drake family of Dartmouth
To: DEVON <devon@rootsweb.com>

Who are William Drake & wife Mary of Dartmouth? Where were they married?
Where did they live prior to St. Saviour Dartmouth?

The following is taken from the transcript of the parish registers of St.

William Drake, bapt. 29 Jan. 1779
Mary Drake, bapt. 5 July 1780
Ann Ashford Drake, bapt. 9 Oct. 1782, bur. 10 Feb. 1785
Elizabeth Drake, bapt. 5 July 1785, bur. 18 June 1796
Ann Drake, bapt. 2 May 1787
Sarah Drake, bapt. 21 May 1789
Harriot Drake, bapt. 4 Mar. 1792, bur. 8 Apr. 1795

daughter Mary Drake married (1) 18 Feb. 1800 John Battisford
daughter Ann Drake married 15 July 1809 John Lidstone
daughter Sarah Drake married 30 Nov. 1806 John Wilmot

The Drake family is not found in the parish registers of St. Petrox.

There are a few Drakes in the parish registers of Tounstal starting in 1801.
I do not know if there is any relationship between them & the above Drakes.

Thank you

Subject: [DEV] Gertrude Drake, born 25 January 1669/70, Ermington
married to Arthur Cuningham 17 December 1691 in Mary Tavy.

Can anyone give any info on this Arthur Cuningham? I am hoping he is Arthur Cuningham of Tavistock, father of Ambrose, Arthur, Grace and Elizabeth.

I have him as (perhaps) being the son of Gervase Cuningham of Bovey Tracey and brother to Jervais, Francis and John

Any help gratefully received.

Hi Jon

As far as I'm aware, this is correct, and the only information I have
on Arthur Cunningham is he was from Ringwood, Tavistock. He married on 17
December 1691 at Mary Tavy, Gertrude, baptised on 25 January 1669/70 at
Ermington (exact birth date not known), was the da. of John Drake of
Ivybridge and Prudence Savery of Slade.
Her other siblings as far as I know

Arthur Cunningham was just a "one off" name in my pedigree. Though I'm
related to the Drakes by a several marriages (Namely the great Sir Francis's
second wife Elizabeth Sydenham, who is a first cousin x 13) I didn't chase
up the many family side-lines of the Drakes, there were far too many to hope
to have the time, unless they were also very closely related to me.
Just incase you are interested there are also 8 Elworthys in my
pedigree. What the relationship is I don't know off hand, but I'm not

Regards Terry
