Dear Roy, A couple of years ago I bought my father Master Genealogist for his birthday. He had a lot of family information and with the software spent thousands of hours committing it all to the computer and enhancing the information. While working on it one day, he prepared to email me the file by exporting to Excel - one of the functions of the program. Imagine our utter disappointment when the information completely vanished off the database! Of course, he was foolish for not backing up the file, but had no concerns as this function was a component of the program. We emailed Master Genealogist who were unable to solve the problem, however, they did admit it was a fault with the program. My father was so disillusioned with the loss of all the work he had done that he gave the project up altogether, being too angry and disappointed to face redoing everthing. The purpose of this email is to ask your advice about what is the simplest, tried and true family tree software that you recommend, that doesn't have such fundamental flaws as this one did. Thank you for your advice. Kind regards, Jane

Hi Jane and thanks for your message. I can't believe that the information disappeared from the program, the manufacturers should be shot. Backing up is the safest way but we all forget some times. If you are after an Australian program, the best (which I use) is; "Relatively Yours" http://www.relativelyyours.com/ its been around for quite a while and is very reliable. or Family Tree Maker (USA) http://www.ftm2005.com/ plus a link to other programs; http://www.gould.com.au/?rid=101 see how you go with that,
