I am a decendant of William and hannah Singleton who came to Aus 1792, as Convicts. Have only recently found this town was names after a family member, But wanting to know more about the Singleton family. Is this couple in the Singleton Cemetery? And would like to hear from other Singleton down lines. William had a daughter Hannah, and this is my connection.

Hey,
I am new to the family history thing but I am a descendant of George Benjamin Lloyd, grandson of Benjamin Singleton - the town founder - and great grandson of William and Hannah. I have literally only just begun to research this but probably the most interesting thing I have turned up so far is a copy of the transcript of the trial that sent William to Australia - if you have not got this yet I would be happy to send it on - just let me know.

Hey Margaret,
you'll never guess, I have just been reading and I found out that William is buried in a graveyard at "Glenridding" in the Singleton area - no mention of Hannah though. Apparently the property is accessible from the road and the public is free to enter the graveyard to take photos etc... |

Hi Margaret,
I am doing some research on my 3xgr grandmother Sarah Bellamy and discovered her brother James Zadock Bellamy married Hannah Sinleton, sister to Benjamin Singleton. Hannah was born at Mulgrave Place, not sure where that is. James and Hannah married 1818 at St John's Church Parramatta and had 14 children. Hannah died 1869 and is buried at St Paul's Church of England, Castle Hill. They were farmers.I have names and birth dates of all their children if you are interested, plus alittle history of their lives at Castle Hill.

Hi Margeret,
I am a decendent of William & Hannah Singleton and would very much like some information about my great great great grandfather *Carl R. Heine*. Carl was the son of Mary Ann Russell [Sarah SINGLETON3, Benjamin SINGLETON2, William SINGLETON1] and Charles Robert Heine. Not much is known about him except that he came from Australia in the Wailing ships I think. He came here [Marshall Islands] and setteled. I don't know much about him, but I don't think he went back home [Australia] after that. It is kind of a mystery. Alot of my great/grandparents have names of his brothers, sisters, family members, etc. over here. Names such as, Claude, Constance, Mary, Bourne, etc. are just a few. So, I just want to know if he is a mystery to you, as he is to us? Anyways, I just wanted to ask that question.
I researched this stuffs on the net for our familie's website and found these sites if it would be helpful to anyone here.

Hello everyone,
I see there are lots of Singleton descendants out there. My line is from Ann Maria SINGLETON the daughter of William and Hannah SINGLETON. Ann Maria married William CLARKE who was also a convict, and neighbour on the Hawkesbury.
I have some information on the Singletons and Clarke's and look forward to hearing from anyone who is related!!

I am a descendant of James Bellamy and Hannah Singleton..
I believe it goes down like this:
James Bellamy and Hannah Singleton had a daughter Mary Anne (b.1825 d.1912), who married a man called James Shields (b.1813). They then had a son also called James (b.1845) who married a woman called Maria Mobbs, they had a son called Mark Shields (b.1879 Pennant Hills d.1949) who married Maude Donman. They had a daughter Lily (b.1898 Carlingford d.1981) who married Leonard Shalson, they then had a daughter named Daphne who is my Grandmother. Daphne married Eric Wenban and had a son Eric Jr, my father. We all still live in the Hills area.
Just thought id post it and maybe shed some light for others?

I am a descendant of Richard and Sarah Ann Singleton. Richard was born in England 1834 and came to Australia around 1850, He was a free man, however his uncle William Singleton was a convict.From what I understand Uncle Benjamin Singleton conveiced his nephew Richard to come to this new great land of Australia.
So from Richard Sarah Cates came my Great Grandmother Rebeca Singleton, and she married Robert Albert Rowe. They had two children in Australia Nellie Rosalind Rowe and Albert Rowe. Albert passed away of a childhood illness.
The family moved to San Francisco after the 1906 Earth Quake. In 1907 Dorthy Rowe was born in San Francisco. Nellie married John Lyon and Dorthy married James McGee. Nellie had one child Elizabeth Jean Lyon born in San Francisco, CA USA July 28, 1926 She married William Edward Fox. These are my parents I am Roselind (Lynn) jane Fox. And I married Michael Cummins Hastings.
We have two childres Gavin Edward Hastings and Gwendolyn Rose Hastings.Gavin -b. Jan 12 1974 Missoila, Montana. USA. Gwen b. Dec 26 1984 Missoula, Montana. USA
My Aunt Dorthy's children are James, Kathleen, Richard, Sharon, and Barbra.
I have not been able to contact my great aunt's family. However they all lived in Fresco, California. USA for many years |

What a great discussion.
My name is Renee Nelson and I am the granddaughter of Roy Graham Shields (g-grandson of James and Mary Ann, through Samuel, then Roy Stanley). I have only found the family two years ago due to my grandparents divorce when my father was very little.
I am extreemly interested in this line of the family and love talking to other relatives about it. I live in Cairns now so I cant get the cemeteries etc but am happy to share any info I have with others.
It seems that there are so many of us that we should try to arrange a get together.

I am seeking information on the descendants of Sarah Singleton (daughter of Benjamin Singleton and Mary Jane Sharling) and Bourn Russell. After Sarah's death in 1852, what happened to their chldren? Bourn remarried in 1856 and went to Eden as harbour master in 1860, but it seems none of the children went with him.
My interest stems from the fact that I am descended from Bourn Russell's youngest brother, Frank.

I am back again. I have a bit of info on the Bowerman/Thomas line and you will find that this is one of the oldest ausie lines. Mary Bowerman/Thomas (nee Partridge) was the daughter of two first fleeters Mary and Richard Partridge who was also known and Rice the left handed floger (I have some excert of books with info on him). Hi, I'm related to John Singleton who married Jane Rotton. Their daughter Mariah married Henry De Boos and their daughter Ida Mary is my father's mother. My father was born in 1908 BUT was given to Louisa Eliza Nelson and was raised as John Nelson. He changed his name by Deed Poll in 1939 from De Boos to Nelson. He had a brother Walter (different father) born 1906 who was raised by the Gosbee family and is known as Walter Gosbee. I'd like help with John Singleton please. |

I am starting to look at the History of William Singleton pre Australian Arrival. Will share what I find out. On the Family Singleton Crest it has ties to the messengers (heralding) and military to the Crown and have the sign they were efficient, had speed of flight, so could have been archers. They had land and were lords of the manor of Singleton Hall. Usually with family crests relate to what the family achieved back at the time.I already have a little of the history from the coat of arms info, that I am willing to share. But hope to have more of the story of the Singleton family.
What is important about the acheivements of the past those come through the blood line and become ingrained in the family throughout the generations. They were land holders in England and then Australia and other places.
It is really quite interesting. |

The original Singleton home, which is now called Chingle House and there is a photo of it. It is one of the most haunted houses in England.
Built by Sir Adam de Singleton in 1260, he was a knight.The house can be found in Wikepedia, but also there is another site that has a good picture of the house.

I too am related to William Singleton who is buried at Whittingham Cemetery. Hannah apparently died on 17 Adugust 1813 aged 56 in Parramatta Lunatic Asylum of "senility and mental decay" William's son Joseph is who I am descended from married Anges Neil in 1829 at Glendon Hunter River. Children of Joseph were Elijah, Elizabeth and Annabella. Any more information on Joseph?? |

Joseph was brought before the bench of magistrates & charged with having in his possession, 1 gallon of spirits, distilled in the Colony & with having distilled the same. He pleaded guilty & because of his youth & having given up the apparatus when demanded, the bench unanimously recommended his case to the clemency of the Governor (Sydney Gazette 24.4.1813).
Joseph opened the Cross Keys Inn on 21st April 1840
Children are:Frederick,1830. Elijah 25/09/1831. James 1833. Annabella 1837. Alfred 22/03/1842

You mentioned some of your ancestors being named after flowers...well, my mother,Ruby Gladys Drew (nee Shields b.1894, mentioned this in one of her stories about her family! Re your trip to Ireland. I would be extremely interested to learn the results of your investigation. I managed to find (via the internet) some information - however, I'm not sure if it is correct. Murtagh could have been from County Leix/Laois (aka Queens County) which is just North from Kilkenny where he was convicted. |

My parents still live on part of the original Bellamy grant in West Pennant Hills. It is interesting how many convict family descendants remained in the WPH Valley until quite recently. Re: William Singleton and Hannah Parkinson.
William Singleton was charged at the Old Bailey in London on 8 Jun 1791 with feloniously stealing 27 yards of calico. His court proceedings can be viewed on the Old Bailey website wwwoldbaileyonlineorg
He was transported to Australia for 7 years, arriving on the Pitt on 14 Feb 1792. His wife Hannah and 2 sons came free on the same ship. she was not a convict, and was one of 7 free women on board.
Hannah Parkinson was the daughter of William Parkinson and Mary Thorpe from Manchester, Lancashire, England, a descendant of John Parkinson, born 1585. Hannah's ancestors on both lines back several generations are on several family trees on ancestrycouk website and the wwwrootswebcom website [insert full stops].
She died on 19 Aug 1813 at Wilberforce, NSW.
I am descended through their daughter Sarah Maria Singleton, who married Thomas Siberry, and their son Joseph Sibraa and Esther Lord.
Has anyone been able to find out anything about William Singleton's parents?

Hi Singleton Family members.
I have very recently discovered that my son is the 6th Great Grandson of William Singleton and Hannah Parkinson. He is descended down the Hibbert, Gardner and Kannar line. Brendan's great great grandmother was Doris Irene Kannar.
I am very envious of all his convict ancestors, as I have none. Yesterday we ordered the convict pardons for Joseph Hibbert and John Gardner from the NSW Records Office.
Does anyone know if William Singleton had a ticket of leave or pardon?
I would like to thank all the Singleton Family members who have shared their family trees on the web and ancestory.com.au - Thank You. You have helped me find so much information - but I still like to thoroughly search the NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages registry office to verify the dates etc.
I would love copies of any photographs of the above families - am happy to pay.
I am also happy to pass on any information that I have, although as a newcomer, I may not have much to offer.

My name is Russell Edwards, I am also a descendant of Sarah Singleton and Bourn Russell who had a daughter named Mary Ann Russell who was married to Charles Robert Heine. Through this union one of their sons whose name was Carl R. Heine who came to the Marshall Islands on a whaling ship from Australia working for Burns Philip Co. He married to Marshall wife and was converted to the christian faith and later on became a missionary under the American Board for Foreigh Mission. He had 2 sons and 7 daughters. An article in the Sydney Daily Mirror, some years ago told the story of Ben Singleton, son of William. It was titled "Son of Lag Blazes Trail to Hunter Valley". He led an expedition in theory led by John Howe and received a land grant where Singleton now stands. My grandmother Elsie Maud Lloyd was the direct descendent and remembered her great grannie, Mary Singleton. |

My name is Samuel Charles Hodgkinson (b. 1975) and I am a direct descendant of James Zadock and Hannah Bellamy on my mother's side, which makes me an 8th generation Australian.
My particular family line branched off when Jane Bellamy (b. 1871, daughter of James Bellamy and Esther Williamson) married Henry William Healey, originally of Buckinghamshire (b. 1867) in 1892.
His daughter Eva Jessie Healey (my maternal grandmother, b. 1900) grew up in Beecroft, Sydney with about 9 other siblings and she married a man by the name of William Henry Piper (b. 1890) (not the Pipers of Point Piper, however) in Sydney and moved to the Central Coast in the 1920s where most of my mother's extended family now live.
My mother married a Hodgkinson (free settlers, mid-19thC from Northern England). Not sure if I'm related to either Clement or William Oswald, if at all.
My father's family worked cattle in both Queensland and NSW, and were (and still are to some degree) based in the Northern Rivers district of NSW around Bellingen and Glen Innes.

I have only tried once though. I have managed to locate Mary Butler's grave with John Butler's FF plaque, Ann Toy (technically isn't one of us, but more like a step mom), and Alice Bowerman (my GG Grandmother)

Hi all,
just an update from my previous information. i know some of you have contacted me in the past so this is a good way to advise of anything i have found.
I have recently purchased a copy of the Hornsby Pioneers which has quite a bit on the shields, bellamys and singleton families. It is out of print and I was very lucky to purchase a copy second hand from the Hornsby Family History Society but it was well worth it.
I would suggest anyone interested look for it in their local library.

My father John de Boos was born in April 1908 to Ida Mary De Boos. His father is not mentioned on the birth certificate. I found he had a brother Walter born in 1906 also without a father's name on his birth certificate.Unfortunately neither knew about the other. Ida didn't marry until she was 68. My father was raised as John Nelson and his brother as Walter Gosbee. She gave them both away though neither were officially adopted by their respective families. Ida is the daughter of Henry de Boos and Mariah Singleton. I would really like to meet family of Ida. Are you out there? |

I descend from both Bellamy sons, John and James. John had a son James and James had a daughter, Ann and they married. After James was killed Ann returned to the area and married Issac Mobbs. Good family detail can be found in 'Pioneers of Hornsby Shire. |

Their 3rd daughter Ada Susannah Smith (1875-1958 - I am named after her) married her cousin Arnold Robert Icely Smith, who then went on to have my grandfather Ross Vickers Smith who married Betty Williams with the result that my mother was born Beverley Ann Smith. |

I'm new to this family tree caper. My name is Mark shields, I'm descended from George Shields (convict)my great great great grandfather who married Jane Holmes in 1819. James Bellamy who married Hannah singleton in 1818 had a daughter Mary Anne who married George's son James in 1844. They had a son George who married Rebecca Clark in 1878.Rebecca's parents were John Clark and Rebecca Mcmullen who married in 1841. Their parents were William Clark and Anna Maria Singleton m 1810 and George Mcmullen and Catherine Carr (kerr) who had married in Ireland in 1794 and came to Australia as indentured workers with their 4 children. As you can see by this, of the 8 great grandparents of my grandfather Henry Shields, son of george Shields and Rebecca Clark: Hannah Singleton and Anna Maria Singleton were sisters. My Grandfather Henry Shields married Philadelphia Friend in 1907. My Grandmother's lineage can be traced back to the pioneering Bush brothers who came to Australia as free settlers in 1804. The Bush connection links me to the famous Bush family in the USA. My father Stanley married Beryl Vaughan in 1956 and the Vaughan Family were pioneering Murrumbidgee Irrigation area farmers in the early 1900's. I almost got it right, I am not from the the George Shields - Jane Holmes line after all. I am descended from the Murty Shields - Elizabeth Morris/Dalton/Kentwell line of the family. George shields also had a son James but James was convicted and transported to Tasmania and died in Mornington in Victoria. From my research anyone from this line could have had a surname of Kentwell if Elizabeth had chosen not to tell James 24 years later that Murty Shields was his father. I am a descendent of Murtagh Shields who was a convict convicted 1798, Kilkenny, Ireland. His crime was Stealing a horse he had a wife and 6 children (unable to clarify this). The convict transport "Ann1" set sail from Cork on the 26/6/1800, the voyage took about 8months, arriving in Port Jackson, NSW 21/2/1801.
My mothers name was June Woodford (nee Shields, she was the daughter of Wallace William Shields, and he was the son of Ernest Haywood Shields, and he is the eldest son of Samuel Shields, and he is the son of James Shields, AND he is the son of Murtagh Shields.

Murtagh Shields
(Aka Murty, Murtey, Murdoch, Marty, & Martin, Sheills, Sheel, Shields, Shealds, Shiels, & Shales.)
The first to live in Australia was Murtagh Shields he arrived at Port Jackson, NSW Via the convict transport Ann 1 on the 21st February 1801. He was convicted in Kilkenny, County Cork, Ireland in 1798, of stealing a horse and a loaf of bread, he was held at Kilkenny gaol 1799, where he petitioned the Governor of Ireland for clemency. Protesting his innocence & that he had a wife, six children and aged parents, all living in poverty. His petition was denied and he was sentenced to transportation in 1800, to the colony of NSW. They set sail from County Cork, on the convict transport Ann 1 on the 26th of June 1800. The voyage taking almost 8 months travelled via Rio De Janerio & the Cape of Good Hope, during the voyage a mutiny took place but was quelled by Captain and crew.

Particulars: Convict ship; 384t and 12 guns; possibly built in France or Spain; originally named Luz St Anne or Luz St Anna; 42 crew plus prisoner guards; travelled via Rio and the Cape of Good Hope; total voyage took 240 days (presumably poor weather hampered the ship's progress in the final leg of the journey, because passage to Rio had been very swift.
Notes: Carried 24 female and 127 male convicts (one of whom was James Byrne). On 29 July, three weeks sailing from Rio, a short-lived mutiny took place which resulted in three wounded prisoners, the execution by firing squad of a ring-leader (the only prisoner to have been executed in this manner aboard a convict ship) and the flogging of another.

1801-1812: Murtagh worked at a factory, then as a stockman for Mr Jamieson. Muster 1806 (included on tape for 1822 census) “Murtoch Shales” employed by Government of Parramatta. 1812 petitioned Governor Lachlan Macquarie for mitigation of sentence dated 21st December 1812. The Governor granted a conditional pardon effective 1813.
On the 15th February 1813, a son James Henry Shields was born in Dural, Greater Sydney, NSW, to Murtagh and Elizabeth Morris. James Henry Shields was christened on the 30th December 1837 he was 24 years old.
Muster 1814, Murty Shields, Ann 1, Free, on stores, labourer in Windsor, Richmond Castlereagh area.
1820: Murtagh’s name appears on a list of those applying for a land grant. 1st June 1820 Murty Shields of Prospect petitioned Governor Macquarie to grant him land for a farm stating he has never been granted land. Murtaugh’s petition was supported by Rev George Middleton officiating chaplain of Parramatta, the hand written notation down the side of the document “40 acres”, 31st March 1821, a list of applicants for land grants shows Governor Macquarie ordered that Murt Shields residing at prospect be promised 40 acres of land area unspecified. No further information was found from 1792-1865.
NSW general census August 1822: Murty Sheal, in the employ of J. Jamieson of Argyle County.
1825: Murtaugh Shiels, in the employ of Mr Rose of Argyle County, Murtaugh’s son James does not appear on the 1825 muster, he may have been raised by his mother, as she was the one who had him baptised .
1828: census Murtaugh’s name does not appear on the census due to a number of reasons many persons were missed.
8th July 1835 aged 75 years old Murdoch Sheel died at Liverpool General Hospital, Buried at St Luke’s Liverpool.
(Murty was the only one to arrive on the Anne or Ann with a name anything like his so we presume this is our Murty).
Elizabeth Morris
Elizabeth Morris was another West Country girl, baptised at Bisley, Gloucestershire on 31 January 1777. She spent her brief childhood in Bristol and, when only ten, was tried but acquitted of a felony. Two years later she was not so lucky and convicted with two men, John Clements and John Rossiter of grand larceny. When still only twelve years old she was sentenced to seven years transportation in Bristol on 5 April 1790. Elizabeth arrived in New South Wales with the Third Fleet on the Mary Ann, an old French ship of 298 tons, with 149 other women on 6 July 1791.
We don't know what she did when she arrived but it seems likely that the women were taken by boat to Parramatta were they undertook domestic work for groups of male convicts.
12 February 1793: the fifteen year old Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, Hannah, with the father being John Dalton, another young convict.
Dalton arrived on the Albermarle in October 1791 and was perhaps unlucky to find himself in this predicament. A youth had stolen a shawl and, to avoid apprehension, had passed it to Dalton and his friend John Lear. The pair may have been suspected of being minor street villains and as a result Dalton, who was only eleven and Lear thirteen were convicted and transported for seven years. The boys spent four months on a prison hulk before boarding the Albermarle and it was understandable that John and Elizabeth should welcome friendly relationship when the system threw them together at Parramatta in 1792. Elizabeth Morris was about fifteen at this time. We don't know what happened to Dalton but when he finished his sentence he left for Norfolk Island as a crewman on the Salamander and it seems that he continued a life at sea. Hannah was 21 months old when John left; her mother not yet eighteen.
4 January 1796: Mother and daughter were still together when Elizabeth married William Kentwell (also referred to as Cantwell) at St. John's Parramatta. At 35 he was almost twice her age and had recently completed his sentence. William was born in London on 23 March 1761 and had been baptised in the St Marylebone Church in London on 29 Sept. 1765. He lived in St. Giles Cripplegate near Covent Garden. At 22 he was transported for seven years for stealing 'with force of arms' two linen handkerchiefs valued at two shillings and goods and chattels of 'other persons unknown'. William spent almost three years in prison or “in the hulks” before he was loaded onto the Admiral Barrington for his voyage to New South Wales.
16 October 1791 he arrived it seems probable that William was sent to the Toongabbie camp and was converted from city life to farming.
The Surveyor-General's notebook for 1796 details a 60-acre block at Toongabbie for William Kentwell. Governor Phillip's policy was to allocate 30 acres for 'worthy' convicts at the expiry of their sentence. Twenty further acres were given for a spouse and ten acres for each child so Elizabeth and Hannah allowed the Kentwell grant to be double that given to a single man. Their grant is situated near the present Pendle Hill Railway Station around the intersection of Binalong and Darcy Roads. William's father was also called William, and his mother was Anne. William II and Elizabeth continued the tradition and first child was baptised William Cody at St. John's on 24 November 1799.
The 1800 muster of the colony recorded William Kentwell as being “free” and farming 15 cleared acres of land at Toongabbie. The farm received rations for a man woman and two children (William III and Hannah). The Kentwell’s were neighbours of Thomas Williams and Ann Davis.
The 1805 muster records William and Elizabeth as being married and having one female child born before marriage (Hannah), and another (Charlotte) along with two boys born after marriage (William and John, born 29 Feb. 1804). Although there is no precise record we can calculate that Charlotte was born sometime in 1802.
In 1805 the settlers of the district selected William as one of the Trustees of the Prospect Common. The Common was 9345 acres and used for common pasturing by settlers and those holding leases.
By 1806 William owned 75 acres and was assigned a convict servant - Lawrence Kirwan. He was now a prosperous small farmer and a member of an association of like-minded emancipists known as the Association of Hawkesbury Settlers. When Governor Bligh arrived in 1806 the Association nailed their colours to the mast and sent the Governor an address of welcome and further letters of support. When the MacArthur forces unseated Bligh and took control of the colony the Association members were at the mercy of the clique of exclusives and members of the NSW Corps. The couple had 2 more daughters Maria, in 1806, and Harriet in 1809.
August 1809: William Kentwell, and seven others, drowned in the Hawkesbury/Nepean River near Windsor during a flood. It seems that he was returning home after purchasing horses for the Government when the accident happened. Elizabeth, now 31, was left with six children, the youngest being just a few months old. Three weeks after she was widowed, on 23rd August 1809, Elizabeth took seven-year-old Charlotte to the Female Orphan Institution. She continued to run the farm with the help of Hannah and the two boys and, a little while later, an Irish convict called Murtagh (Murty) Shields who had a wife and six children at home in Kilkenny. Shields had been tried for horse stealing and transported for life in 1800. (He may have been assigned to the Kentwell's in place of Kirwan.)
15th February 1813: Elizabeth gave birth to her seventh child a boy James Henry Shields at Toongabbie, NSW. Twenty four years later she took him to be baptised at St. John's Parramatta, NSW on the 30th December 1837 she revealed that Murty was his father.
By 1814 Murty Shields had moved on and Elizabeth had formed a relationship with another convict, 21 year old Thomas Thompkins.
He was born in Northampton but moved to London and obtained a position in the household of William Strong Esq. in Russell Square. He was eventually promoted to Upper-Footman in 1812 but succumbed to temptation and left Strong's house in February 1812 and took some of his employer's silver plates with him to his lodgings across the river at 8 Blackfriars Rd. Southwark. When he attempted to pawn the silver he was caught and convicted at the Old Bailey a fortnight later. He was sentenced to death but as his previous employer stated that he had 'always behaved with the greatest deportment (and) was of good character', he was commuted to transportation for life.
He was 5'7" tall of fair ruddy complexion with brown hair and hazel eyes and when he arrived in Sydney in June 1813 on the Fortune 2 was sent to the lumberyard in Parramatta. He remained at this work until 13 December 1817 when he obtained a Ticket-of-Leave on the recommendation of William Jewell and Rev. Samuel Marsden. Jewell, who ran the yard, said Thomas was 'sober, honest and industrious' and Marsden judged him an 'honest and industrious man being of very good character'.
So Elizabeth, now 40, seems to have found another good man and she married Thomas Thompkins at St. John's 6 August 1815. In a reversal of the situation of her first marriage she was almost twice the age of her groom. The bride's eldest daughter, now Mrs Hannah Beckett, was a witness.
Elizabeth’s first child with Thomas, Henry Thomas, was born at Toongabbie a year later but this happy event was overshadowed when her eldest son, the sixteen year-old William Cody Kentwell, was killed by natives at Wilberforce around the same time. The second child of Elizabeth and Thomas, Sarah T, was born two years later in October 1817. D'Arcy Wentworth, one of the Macarthur clique, forced Elizabeth off at least some of William's land in 1815. She received a bull and two cows as part payment for the land. But in May 1820 when her son John Kentwell applied for a land grant he said he was living with his widowed mother at Toongabbie. His grant of 100 acres, of which fourteen were cultivated, adjoined the western boundary of the land of Thomas Ashford. He owned 2 horses and eight cows. He had married Elizabeth James in 1824 and their daughter Elizabeth Jane was born the next year.
Watson records Thomas Thompkins as obtaining a conditional pardon in November 1825 but the 1828? Census records Elizabeth as being aged 50 and Thomas, 34 and still on ticket-of-leave. Her younger children were 13 and 11 and her others were now living separately as adults.
In 1822, despite his status, Thomas had bought 50 acres originally granted to Patrick Silk at Castle Hill. He next bought the adjacent 40 acres from Thomas Ashford in 1823 and became a neighbour of John and Elizabeth Kentwell.
The 1828 Census recorded him as being a landowner at Baulkam Hills with 90 acres. Twenty-six acres were cleared and cultivated and he owned 3 horses and 19 cows; he also had the services of two convict servants.
Thomas Tompkins became seriously ill and sold his farm. In July 1829 John Pye paid £200 for the 90 acres. Two days after Christmas of that year Thomas died aged thirty-eight and was buried in St John's Churchyard. Elizabeth became a widow for the second time at age fifty-nine and still had the fourteen year-old Henry and twelve year-old Sarah to raise.
Elizabeth lived on for another twenty-three years and remained at Castle Hill where at least four of her children still lived. She died in 1852 aged seventy-five and was buried at St John's Parramatta. She had been twice married in the Church and had borne twelve children with four fathers.
James Henry Shields
James Henry Shields was born 15th February 1813, married Mary Ann Bellamy on the 19th October 1844 at St Ann’s Church of England Hunters Hill NSW.
Mary Ann was born on the 9th August 1825 at Pennant Hills, NSW.
They went on to be prominent owners of Orchard land on Aiken’s Rd; West Pennant Hills James was employed as a carpenter & a Shingle-splitter.
James & Mary Ann had 11 children, 8 boys and 3 girls, who all married into well known families producing thousands of descendants for Murtagh Shields there is more information on all of their children, but our immediate relative is Samuel Shields

Samuel Shields Born 6 April 1857 married Bertha Matilda Bowerman (approx in 1882), she was born 9 Sep 1858, died 23 Nov 1923 at Age: 65 they had 15 children 8 boys and 6 girls their names were Emily, Clarrice, Hilda, Rosine, Olive, Ernest Shields, Percival Shields, Roy Shields, Horace Shields, Wilton Shields, Bertha, Herbert Shields, Bruce Shields, Walter Shields, & Fredrick Shields. Our immediate relative is Ernest Shields.
Ernest Haywood Shields
Ernest Haywood Shields was born 1879; in Parramatta, NSW he married Ethel Bridget Maher who was born in 1884, in Central Cumberland, NSW.
Ernest was the eldest son of Samuel & Bertha
Ethel was the eldest daughter of Edward James Maher & Dorcas Mobbs. She had 2 sisters and 4 brothers Millie, Annie, Thomas, William, Charles & Bernard. Her father died when she was 13 years old of a shunting accident, at Clyde, NSW. Leaving Ethel to help her mother raise the 6 other children.
Ernest eventually died in 1945 at Hornsby, NSW, he was 66 years old Ethel eventually died in 1959 at the age of 75, at Ryde, NSW.
Ernest & Ethel had 9 children; Rupert, Malcom, Wallace, Effie, Jean G (aka Gwenie), Ronald, Jack, Nancy & Gordon.
Rupert: was born 1906 & died at the age of 6 months of Diphtheria, he was buried at Carlingford Cemetery.
Malcom: was born 12th June 1907 he died at the age of 26 years of age from Gangrene, he is also buried at Carlingford Cemetery with Rupert.
Wallace: was born 15th September 1909, he married Hilda Carmen Nowlan in 1932 Hilda was born 1912 she was the only daughter of Josephine Dunks & Jack Nowlan
She had 2 brothers whose names were Harold & Jack. Wallace and Hilda had 8 children: Raymond John, Wallace II (aka Bubby), June, Faye, Dawn, Gail, Leonie & Rhonda. Sadly, Hilda passed away in 1975 after one of her own daughters June passed away a couple of months earlier also in 1975.
Raymond John: was born 1931, he married Shirley Ann Bulger, they had 2 girls

James Kentwell Shields
When Elizabeth Kentwell and Murty Shields had James in 1813 he was named James Kentwell.
The birth was registered as both James Huntwell, parents Merty and Elizabeth and also James Frentwell, parents Marty and Elizabeth when the registers were typed up due to difficulty reading the handwritten registers.
Source "The Kentwell Chronicle" - book about the Kentwell family history.
When James was at Menangle school in 1827, he used the named James Cantwell Shields and he was then living with his father, Murty Shields.
That same year in 1827, aged 14 he was baptised James Shields at St Johns Church, Parramatta and from then on he never used the name Kentwell again.

Hi everyone. I have done quite a bit of research over the years on the descendants of Bourn Russell & Jane Mackreth. What I have found is most people's research stops at Bourn Russell. I have done a whole lot more on the family of both Jane Mackreth and her Sister Susannah, who married Matthew Stewart in Singleton, because their Sister Elizabeth Mackreth, who did not come to Australia, was my 3rd Great Grandmother. This makes Bourn Russell (the first Harbourmaster and Pilot at Eden from 1860) my first cousin 4 x removed, and just about everyone else posting on here a cousin. Happy to share information. |
