Hello there, I have just been looking at your Descendant chart of the Shearer family of Singleton, NSW Australia on your web page at http://www.xroyvision.com.au/andrews/shearer/shearer.html you have listed there as the daughter of Eliza Andrews and George Augustus Shearer the following -

This is not correct. The Mary Shearer who married George Banks is the daughter of James Gilmour-Shearer and his wife Margaret (nee Frame) who arrived in Australia in Australia on the "Sirocco" in January 1864, and settled in Singleton. This Mary Shearer was born in Scotland in 1853 and she married George William Banks in 1874 at Newcastle.
Her brothers and sisters were -
Janet Shearer - married John Price 1880 Singleton
Gavin Shearer - married Harriett Roser 1878 Singleton
Margaret Shearer - married Emanuel Perkins 1879 Wallsend (This is my family line)
Robina Shearer - married Thomas Hobson 1885 NSW
James Shearer - Married Mirriam Lamb 1886 NSW
I have heaps of information on the Shearer families in Singleton, too much for this email. However, I should point out the reason for the hyphenated name of James Gilmour-Shearer. This gentleman arrived in Australia as James Gilmour, with his wife and children listed under that name. His (I presume half brother because they definately had the same mother) brother David Shearer had come out to Australia in 1853 on the "Fortune" and settled in Singleton. James & family lived and were listed in Singleton under Gilmour for some years and then suddenly their name became Shearer (instead of Gilmour) How or why I have not been able to find out as yet. Same people just suddenly a different surname!
Also another half sister of James Gilmour-Shearer who also came to Australia was Robina Russell who was married to an Abraham Andrews . They also lived in the Singleton area. Their children are
Janet Born Scotland. Aged 4 in 1863
Lewis Born on boat on way to Australia 1863
Jane born 1865 NSW
Robert G Born 1868 NSW
Robina Born 1870 NSW
George Born 1872 NSW
Mary Born 1874 NSW
Gavin Born 1875 NSW

William Russell Born 1881 NSW
John Born 1882 NSW
David Born 1884 NSW
James Gilmour-Shearer's mother Janet Hamilton and her husband Gavin Russell also came to Australia in 1863 on the "Sirocco"
along with the rest of their family. It is very involved (grin) so if you are interested in any further information please let me know.

Hi there Anne and thanks for the great message re the Shearers.
My interest in the Shearers stems back to Eliza Shearer who married George
Shearer, Eliza was sister to my great grandfather Edward Andrews.
I have traced and tracked most of the Shearers except for some of the girls including your
Mary Shearer (Banks).
We (my cousin and I) had a guess at our Mary Shearer marrying Banks, same area
etc etc but we were never sure - had no real proof.
I had notes entered on my PC in 1994 saying there were 2 possibilities of our Mary
marrying - 1874 and 1884 .
Some people thought there was only one Shearer family in the Singleton district,
so we were amazed to find that George Shearer (who married Eliza Andrews) came (from the same area in Scotland
as your Shearers) and found out that the Glendon family shunned George Shearers family because he came
as a convict. I have a lot on George and Elizas line and yes, Peter Andrews and myself
ran into the same barrier that divided George Shearer from the Glendon Shearers when we were researching back in
the early 90s.
I asked another researcher from the Glendon Shearers if she would like her material ( whatever she was happy with)
on the site as well, as it would help other researchers as well. If you would like anything added (even the basic pedigree)
just let me know - all credit will go to you.
