I'm researching the Cantwells, who were to be found in and around Singleton, Patricks Plains, Maitland, Muswellbrook and Branxton from the 1850s to at least the 1920s. They married into the Brennan, McCrohon, Kenna, Doyle, Hayes, Byrne, O'Shea and Vitnell families.
The Cantwells were involved in newspaper publishing, butchering, farming, and the Catholic Church (several priests and nuns). They descend from James Cantwell (b abt 1803 Cloneen, Kilkenny) and Mary Brennan. James was a convicted transported aboard the James Laing in 1834 for illegally swearing oaths, while Mary follow him out in 1851 with their children aboard the Garland.
By strange coincidence, I lived in Singleton in the 1980s and worked on the Singleton Argus, without realising the family connection to the area. My maternal grandfather was a Cantwell.

A quick update.
I now have the death certificate for Mary Cantwell (nee Brennan), and she died at Ravensworth on 26 October 1885. She was buried in Singleton RC Cemetery two days later.
I have a grandson of hers, John Cantwell, living at Ravensworth at the time.
I now have 52 people with Singleton links, mainly Cantwells, but with a number of Wilkinsons, Hoads and Vitnells plus singles of Doyle, Frazer, Spinks and Bates.
There are also many connections to other parts of the Hunter.
