I am Julie Wilson and my grandmother was Zillah Beattie. Two Beattie brothers, William and David came to Australia from County Tyrone Ireland with their families. David Beattie and his wife Margaret Long, had five children:- Mary Jane Beattie who married Thomas Thrift; James Beattie who married Mary Jane Dugen/Duggan; Rosanna Beattie who married Francis Parmeter; William Beattie who married Adeline Mary Thornley; and, Edward Beattie who married Katherine F. McGowan. The Beatties established farms at Boggy Flat which backed on to Glennies Creek. The house is no longer and the farm is owned by one of the coal mines. Other well-known families that married Beatties were: Stubbs, Sim, and Wood families. All the children and their families were farmers in the Mt Thornley, Gouldsville and Whittham district. My grandmother was the thirteenth child of James Beattie and Mary Jane Dugen/Duggan. (Edward) Leslie Beattie brother to my grandmother enlisted in the 2nd Infantry Bat. in World War I and was wounded on the shores at Gallipoli and later died on board the hospital ship. He is remembered in the Honour Roll at All Souls Anglican Church and on the War Memorial in Singleton Park. He is also remembered on the grave of his parents, James and Mary Beattie in the church yard of the Anglican Church at Warkworth. I hope you may find this of interest. |
