Subject: Bauer Family - Reuben Elkin Date: Tuesday, 26 April 2005 3:58 AM Hello Roy I am trying to research my family history. My maternal grandmother was Frances Elkin and I have found reference to her brother Reuben on your site. I had already found that he married Wilhelmine Bower and their son was the famous Prof Adolphus P Elkin of Sydney University. In your images page, I see that you have a good photograph of the Elkin family and it would be a great favour if you could email this to me. I can see from the small image on the screen that there is a close resemblance to some of my uncles and aunts. You may be interested to know (if you have not already picked this up) that Reuben was born in Portsmouth in about 1863 and his father, Moses Elkin was the first rabbi of the Auckland Jewish community for about 10 years from 1865. My grandmother was born at sea off the Cape of Good Hope and 5 other brothers and sisters were born in New Zealand. One of the brothers was also called Adolphus and he became a well-known cigar merchant in London. Look forward to hearing from you. Best regards Ken Solomons |

Reuben married Ellen Bauer and she was sister to my great grandfather. I think that Reuben was involved in some court appearances over the way he treated Ellen, I can find out if you are interested. Over the weekend I will send you high quality images of Reuben and Ellen. Adolphus was quite a famous anthropologist worldwide, I havent done much reading on Him but he is mentioned in many articles etc. I donšt know if you want to contact any living Relatives of Reuben and Ellens line, let me know,

I have only recently started looking into family history as, when you are younger, you don't think to ask your parents. I was in Australia a couple of years ago and found my grandfather's grave in Falkner Cemetery in Melbourne. He was Frances Elkin's husband. Best regards Ken

Hi Ken/Roy I just found this page after searching on Google for the name "Moses Elkin". My sister and I have been investigating our paternal family tree. Our father was the son of Pauline Elkin, who was Reuben's sister. Pauline was born in New Zealand while her father, Moses, was rabbi in Auckland. I would be really interested in any other information you may have on the Elkin family and would be happy to share with you what we have found so far. |

Hi David, the only reason I have Elkin in my lineage is through marrying into my Bower family, but as you can see from Ken's entries, he must have a fair bit on the Elkins. I will send you Ken's email address to you by email and not posting it on this site. |
