Subject: Family tree. Date: Thursday, 16 June 2005 6:36 AM Hello. Can you help the Ahearn family in Torquay, Devon, England? We are trying to find information about Jane's grandfather, Hugh Leonard Bauer who originated from Hamburg before WW2 ,he lived in a big house in Hamburg, which was taken over for use by the town's people,he then came to Exeter, England to teach the English how to make good sausages. He married my grandmother, Dorothy Glanville. We do know that my grandfather was 1 of 22 children some of which were twins. During the war Hugh was sent to Jersey. That is all we know. Please could you help us to find out more? Many thanks, |

Hi there and thanks for the message. My Bauers came from a village called Dettenhausen in Baden, Germany in 1857 and settled in the Goorangoola district outside of Singleton in NSW, Australia. The only way that I could get my Bauer lineage back to early Germany was through paying a German rsearcher a fair bit of money - but it paid off. You would have to sort out as to which German village/town your Bauers came from before you could get anywhere with research, christian names are so common. Bauer is a common name like Smith in Germany ( so I have been told). Other options: Cyndis list at; http://www.cyndislist.com/ It is huge and is dedicated to EVERYTHING genealogy. The other thing to do is join the Bauer/Bower mail List. Instructions are at; http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/b/bauer.html A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding the Bauer/Bower surname and variations http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/b/bauer.html http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/b/bower.html One other is; The Devon UK Discussion board at; http://members.boardhost.com/devonfhs/ This may help you in your quest, regards, Roy Andrews
