HI I am looking for any information of the parentage /ancestors of John Drake b 1774 in unknown. Married 7th of June 1802 St Clements Dane Church Westminster, England to Sarah Penrose b 1775 – 1850, Daughter of Francis Penrose of Bicester, Oxfordshire m Sarah Gough of Souldern, Oxfordshire. They Lived in Woburn Bedfordshire, England from about 1802 to the mid 1820’s, as John Drake inherited his uncle John Thornton’s woolen and Draper Business. His mothers Name is Sarah Thornton father unknown Drake. They moved to Maida Hill, Middlesex some time after this where he died on 9 December 1840 of bilious fever , buried 15th December 1840 , Kensal Green cemetery. No head stone remains. They had 4 known children Francis Penrose Drake b 1803 m Elizabeth Livermore – farmer of Blackmore Essex, Sarah Ann Drake b 1805 m John Moxon of Hannover Square, Thomas Henry Drake b 1807, and Robert Edward Drake 1812, farmer of Brentwood Essex m Sarah Louisa Freeman.
There is a chest in the Royal Grenwich Maritime museum, Called Drake’s Chest, which was passed as part of a dowry at the time of the marriage of John Drake to Sarah Penrose which remained in the Gough family until the early 1960’s when it was sold to the museum. The curator at the museum tells me that the information given them at this time was he was a descendant of a Francis Drake, this information was also written in his granddaughter Ann Penrose Gough nee Moxon’s family bible in the late 1800’s – but mentions no more. All family crests where bequeathed to the Plymouth library in Devon after the decease of Alfred E Moxon, the great grandson of John Drake and Sarah Penrose, through their son Robert Edward Drake( above) in the 1830’s these include the Drakes of Ashday Hall, Yorkshire, Drake of Hardley, Norfolk and The Arm’s of Drake , Drake of Sir Francis – in the time of Elizabeth 1 as well as Penrose of king George 3rd, Penrose of Elizabeth and the Moxon arms. His own daughter Sarah Ann Moxon nee Drake claimed descent from the Drake’s of the Armada.
John Drake was not a poor man being bequeathed land and estates from more than one of his relations wills and is also listed on his wife’s death certificate in 1850 as a farmer, on his own in 1840 a gentleman. His family married as usual in the Aristocratic blue blooded fashion for some generations after him and had every day connections to royalty. Even in his own grave are is buried a famous water color artist and yet even in his death he still remains elusive.
I can make the connections to the Drakes of Ashday Hall as well as the Penrose’s of king George 3rd but as for the other drake connections such as the Drakes of Hardley, Norfolk and the Drakes of sir Francis in the time of Elizabeth 1 I have no Idea. It doesn’t bother me if he is really connected in some way to the Famous Sir Francis Drake or not in all honesty I would just like to know who his father is and where that line comes from.
