Not sure if you can help, my wife has been researching her Drake
ancestors for many years. She is reasonable happy with the line back
to John who married Joan Glanville in 1596 at Whitchurch. The entry in
The Visitations of Devon has us confused. It seems to be
contradictory, first it states he was buried in 1640 at Whitchurch and
then its states he was cast adrift, etc. Could you perhaps enlighten
us on this matter?
Also is there any "proof" that he was the John who went round the with
Sir Francis?

Hi Ken and Megan,
sorry about the late response to your message.
John Drake is real tricky as there may have been 100s of them back in
the 15-16th century.
I have the same problem with a John Drake, who could be the same one
that you are after.
My Drake line goes back to a John Drake from North Devon and alive in
1619 and owning
land.
The John Drake that went around the world with the Admiral was the
Admirals brother.

Fort Diego near Panama after being shot trying to board a Spanish
ship.

John (John 2), of West Crowndale, buried November 15, 1602, in
Whitchurch, will probated December 20, 1602, in Exeter;
married 1562, John Libbey (Willoughby), buried May 10, 1600, at
Whitchurch. Children:
i. John, baptized August 3, 1564; buried September 24, 1640, in
Whitchurch; page to Sir Francis Drake at age of 10 years,
and went to Ireland with him; circumnavigated the globe; married Joan
Glanville, January 26, 1596-7, and had five sons
and three daughters. Records of their descendants are found in the
parish registers of Whitchurch, Tavistock, Wolborough,
Stoke Damerel and Buckland Monachorum.
Can't tell you much more,
its just frustrating.

fully sort out the full story as to which John is which.

Ken,
The John Drake (1564-1640) that married Joan Glanville (c.1578-1642) is not the same John Drake that accompanied Sir Francis Drake on his circumnaviagtion round the world in 1577-1580. The Visitations of Devon 1895 is definitely in error. The latter John Drake (c.1563-1650) was his cousin....specifically the son of Robert Drake (1520-1570) and Anna Luxmore (15??->1587). Robert Drake was the younger brother of Edmund Drake, who was Sir Francis Drake's father. This latter John Drake was eventually captured by the Spanish and later had a Spanish wife, never returning to England and ended his days as a Catholic. |
