G'day Roy,
When recently perusing a copy of the original Parish Map for
the Parish of Wambo--which includes Jerrys Plains--I noticed that S.E.,
H.E. & A.J. Drake, were the grantees of portions 195 & 196 of 78 and 62
acres respectively, and adjoining portion 23 of 50 acres granted to Malcolm
Brown, the MLA for that area in the 1930s.
I send this in case these Drake family members were not well known to
you.

Hi Greg and thanks for the message and info.
SE is my 2x great grandmother and HE and AJ are my
great grandmothers brothers. The info on the land portions
is great to have. Are you the Greg Ball from
Bowmans Creek????

No Roy, no relationship at all. Greg is s/o Alan the s/o Norman. Originally
BALLS--they settled the Goorangoola area about 1865 and are a R.C. family.
Mine is the only Anglican family I have ever found--and I cannot trace them
back beyond 1844--when James Ball wed Charlotte Grey in the temporary C of
E. at Jerrys Plains. Cannot trace the Greys either Have exhausted almost all
avenues of inquiry.

Yes, the other Greg from Bowmans Creek shares the same Drake blood as
myself.
I have some info on your Ball family - will try and did it out over
christmas. Have you
checked the many records at the Singleton Family History Society at
Singleton.
The society is manned by a collection of very keen volunteers and they have
so many records there at the society room. They also do a $10 research of
the
records held at the society.

Hello Roy,
Yes, I visit the SFHS every time I have been down there--but
that is not very often, as I cannot get about much. But I have searched
every line I can recall--The M.Mercury & Argus--bought every book written
about the area--shipping records, convict records--TOL's etc. As the
GG-parents were married by banns-there would be no need for permission to
marry. I have had people write to me with advice that Charlotte had a
previous marriage in the Millfield area and that she came from England as
Charlotte Bourne.
James Ball is mentioned in John Smith's diary--also mentioned in Govt
Returns for Pats Plains as having 40 acres on the river just below the
junction with Redmondvale Ck. Charlotte's death is not registered--even
though her Death notice is on the front page of the Mercury. As James had
left home--I think he had trouble with the 'Bottle'--I could not get a D/C
for him--so I had to eliminate every James Ball death from 1870. I finally
got it down to one in 1884--but the cert had nothing but his name and the
result of the Coroner's enquiry. They didn't even have a guess at his age.
He died at Tallawang, some 10-15 miles out from Gulgong, towards Dunedoo.
That's where he is buried--in the bush--no marker of any kind.
I got my proof when I went to the Probate Div. and their records show a
letter of administration granted to a James Ball--no address shown--could
have been anybody--but I noticed the Proctors were 'Shaw and Gould' of
Singleton. So the James Ball would have been Grandfather, and the
application was not made until Charlotte's death in 1893. It took me 10
years, but I got absolute proof from Gulgong a year ago when I purchased
Ruth Davis' recent book. But it has been interesting.
Noted a Drake--Professor of ?? in a doco shown on SBS last night,
dealing with "String Theory" [don't ask]. Do you follow the US branch of
Drakes ?
