In my research for indexing material for www.ryersonindex.org I have been
using some original bound copies of newspapers in the 1880's and I have just
moved to 1891.
Something that does not appear to be very well know is that the SMH each
fortnight, or so, had a "Summary to the U.K. per............" Ships that
appear to be used on that route are Oroya, Cuzco, Australia, Lusituania and
Orient from memory. While the "Summary" went on Thursday inthe 1880's, it
went on Mondays in 1891. The 23 February 1891 is one such day, and the
information is on about page 5, headed in the top left hand corner "Summary
for Europe. per S.S. Oroya"
Included in each Summary of about a page, maybe more sometimes, were reports
on the Political scene, Mining, Sporting, big news events, some Inquests,
but a lot of the editions also had a Summary of the Birth, Marriage and
Death Notices published since the last summary. Each of these notices have
the exact dates, and marriages the place and name of the Minister.
Some of the Optical Character Recognition is not the best and a friend told
me just last week how he found a notice in this Summary, which had not come
up within the "Family Notices" section for the day in question. Once found
in the "U.K. Summary" he was able to go back to the correct date where he
found the print distorted.
The search of the paper can be restricted by using the "Family Notices"
option if specifically looking for BDM information.
Nearly every day there are also Inquests and Casualties which name the
injured person, address, and treatment for the type of accident.
With so many newspapers now available on line the Ryerson Index is very keen
to find some more indexers so that we can include these names in our index.

Twelve new indexers prepared to do one day each for a month would complete
another year on the Ryerson Index. Most days for the period in the early
1900's would take less than half an hour to index and check. If you have got

location is not a problem as all contact is via email. We do have indexers
working outside Australia, and in each state of Australia.
