Hi Allannah, there is a "murdering flat" down Victoria way, around where the Gold Rushes use to be. (1851 ONWARDS) Roy |

I am interested in the origin of the name Murdering Swamp too. I have a Lewis family living there and in Aspley in the 1860s and 70s. marie |

Hi Roy Has anyone heard of Coindaar? It is named as birthplace in @1837 of a relative who was married in Merriwa and died in Dubbo. Not sure if it could be a property name. Thanks for anyone's ideas/help - Alison |

Village of Apsley was one of the villages in NSW set out by the Govt surveyor that was not taken up by enough residents to continue as a village. Its name was changed to THE LAGOON 29-4-1877. Apparently The Lagoon was originally known as Murdering Swamp. See Old Parish Maps on the site HLR Viewer and go to County of Bathurst, Parish of Apsley. |

Correction to mine of Jan 18, 2021. Newspaper The Empire (Sydney) July 25,1871 carries an article, "Towns and Villages of New South Wales - Rockley" which gives the location of Murdering Swamp as being on the road fron Perthville to Rockley between Davys Creek and the first rise in the road going south. It mentions "Vale Bridge" which is no longer over Davys Creek as the road has been moved to a new crossing. |
