1.2b.3.2.1 George DRAKE[40],[41]

Birth: 1817[41]
Occ: Miller[41]

On 1860 census, George DRAKE is listed as 43 a Miller and is living smack dab in the middle of William Bennett DRAKE, Mariah DRAKE HARRIS and Mary DRAKE JOHNSON. Also with Mariah is Martha DRAKE listed as 75. Now it is possible that this George is MarthaŐs son, but I donŐt think so, she would be living with him if that were the case. George is also living on the land which Elizabeth DRAKE was living on in 1850 which indicates to me that he is her eldest son.

He was a Miller like William Bennett , whose personal and real estate holdings were listed as 00. He and his wife Sophronia, 35 yrs old are listed as being born in NC and their children all born in TN are William,10 Sarah, 7 and Frances 3. This indicates that the couple moved to TN around 1850.

Spouse: Sophronia UNK[41]
Birth: 1825

Children: William (1850-)
Sarah (1853-)
Francis (1856-)

1.2b.3.2.2 Mariah DRAKE[42]

Birth: 1819/1825, NC

It is possible that this woman is the sister of William Bennett DRAKE, not his aunt. At this time, June 2, 1997, I am hedging my bets by listing her as both.

It is my belief that this "John HARDEN" is really John L. DRAKE. According to Madison County Marriage records, John L DRAKE married Sophronia HARDEN in 1850. There is no other John L DRAKE in TN and no John DRAKE in TN aged 29, which is the age he would have been according to the marriage records.

Miscellaneous information:
He always reports that he was born in North Carolina on pension apps.
WBDrake was unable to write but in one of his testimonies for pension, he states that his eyes made it impossible for him to read.
At the age of 69 his complexion was reportedly blond and his hair white.
He had blue eyes and at the age of 72 was reported to have 'light hair' of course it was probably grey by that time.
In 1886, he was reportedly 5'6 ",143 lbs at the age of 53. His pulse was 74, respiration, 18, temperature 99
In 1889, he was reportedly 5'9 ",145 lbs at the age of 57. His pulse was 84, respiration, 20, temperature 98.5
In 1892, he was reportedly 5'8 1/2",147 lbs at the age of 60. His pulse was 70, respiration, 18, temperature 97.5
In 1895, he was reportedly 5'8",147 lbs at age of 63. His pulse rated of 78 then 84 then 84,respiration 18, temperature 98.2/3.
In 1899, hew was reportedly 5'10, 135 lbs at age of 67. His pulse rate was 90/102/120 (sitting, standing, exercise), respiration 20,20,22, (sitting, standing, exercise)temperature, 98.
In 1901, he was reportedly 5'10, 136 lbs at age of 69. His pulse rate was 97 , respiration 19, temperature, 99.
In 1904, he was reportedly 5'8, 135 lbs at age of 72. His pulse rate was 102/118/130 (sitting, standing, exercise), respiration 20,24,28, (sitting, standing, exercise)temperature, 98.8

William Bennett DRAKE is listed twice in the TN 1860 census.
(1.) Drake, Bennet 26, Tabertha 23, Jno. 1,Madison Co 258-197 and
(2) Drake, Bennet 28, Bertha 24,Jno. Chester 1,Madison Co 144-133.
They must have moved twice in that time. My question is why did they move and how are their ages so wrong?

Notes: April 22, 1996
Libertha and William must have met in Tennessee around 1857 unless they had always know each other which was possible.

In 1850, Joseph Meadow is living in Tazewell, Va with Libertha and wife and 2 other daughters and in 1860 there is a Joseph A. Meadow living with a Mary H. in Sumner, Tn. Sn116-296. I suspect that this is Mary HARDIN and that she is probably a sister.

Fairfield, Il. county courthouse,no records prior to 1886, courthouse fire, 2/17/95,death records, book, book #3, 1910-1916p.23

"BENNETT DRAKE, w.m., 78 yrs, 6 months, 21 days old, died Nov. 7, 1910 at around 11PM.married, farmer, lived in Ill. for 45 years, died at Orchardville, Wayne county buried in orchardville cemetery., Nov.9,1910. Undertaker Partlow, from Bluford Il. Cause of death, stenosis of mitra valve, with secondary cardiac asthma. Attending doctor, JF BOYLE, Orchardville, witnessed dec 10, 1910 anf filed feb 24, 1911.

(The information below conflicts with the Civil War memorial found next to Wm Bennett's Grave found in Orchardville, Il. This small stone states that Wm B Drake was with with the 42 th Illinois Cavalry, H Company.) It is possible that he served in both.
According to the Adj. General's Report for Illinois, vol. 4, 1861-1866
E.505.2, I295 v.4 p. 552
lists for 42th Ill Cavalry, company H. William (D)not B, enlisted Oct 24, 1864 as a substitute. However, this seems to be a copying error as the enlistment date is is stated to be Oct 28, 1864 by his pension records.
This would have been one month after his second son, my GGrandfather, William David Drake was born., He mustered out Oct 20, 1865.
According to his pension records, WB Drake moved to Effingham, IL in 1863..

There is some evidence that he was also a private in Tennessee, Confederate cavalry, Newsom's brigade, 19th regiment. which was formed in 1863 and consolidated with many other brigades under General W.B. Forrest. In "Tennesseans in the Civil War, pt.2, A Military History of Confederate and Unio Units with available Rosters, pub by the Civil War Centennial Commission., Nashville, 1965. He is listed as:
"Drake, Wm.B., Pvt. E. Co, Newsom's Cavalry, enlisted in Madison co, Tenn. in the Madison co."

SUPPLEMENT TO THE OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE ARMIES, PART 2, RECORD OF EVENTS VOL 2, ILLINOIS INFANTRY, 38TH-49TH
A paper in WB's pension application says that his regiment was at
Nov 24, 1964-Columbia, TN
Nov 30, 1864-Franklin TN
December 1864-Nashville, TN
December 31,1864-near Lexington, Ala
Absent sick, May and June, 1865
June 30,1865-near new Orleans, LA
July 31, 1865-Camp Ivoire, Tx
August 31,1865-Port Lavaca, Tx.
In his pension app. he states that he "Was put in a regiment up at Chicago" and hadn't seen any of his fellow soldiers since that time.

Feb.10, 1886, William filed for his pension first .
The pension records include among other things the following facts:
If is first stated that he could write, but later this seems not to have been the case.He was only married once.
He filed for a disability pension for an eye disease which he stated was aquired about Nov 30, 1864 while at Franklin TN. This pension was granted.
[The spelling is his]
His description of the event is that he 'was overheat' and "that caused me to be 'weak eyed' and a few days after i was deatailed to gard cattle and i was not with the ridgment any more until about June the 25/65 and about July the 1/65 i was taken down with feaver at nashvill tenn and while i was sick at nashvill i was treated in my tent and was nursed by Rufus Hunt"
He was treated in the hospital for the eye condition at Nashville in June of 1865 and at Fort Levacco, Texas in August of 1865.

People who at various times made affidavit include:
A.L. SCOTT (His daughter Serilda married a "Scott")
John A.L. SCOTT

Oct.19,1887, Lewis J. FIELDS, MD a citizen of Elliottstown in the county of EFFINGHAM states that he has know the soldier for 24 years.
"I was said soldier family physician for one year previous to his enlistment in the army knew him intimately an am sure he was a sound man at time of enlistment."
" I would further state that said soldier came home from the army afflicted with granulated sore eyes for which he called on me for treatment as quick as he arried at home about the first days of November 1865. I treated said soldier from Nov 1st to march 1867 for diseased eyes and furnished him "??ettect" to take with him to Wayne co his present residence."
If he had known WB for 24 years, he would have met him in 1863.

Oct 15, 1887,Wm H. KELSO, Doctor, verifies all eye problems & says he treated WB from 1871-1882 and that he live within 5 miles of WB and met him every few days

Jan 27, 1887, Rufus HUNT, Clay County,Il,.: States that WB, with whom he served in the same company and regiment "saw a regimental surgeon while in Nashville". Also says that he "nursed WB through fever with bad head ache and bone pain". Says he has been aquainted for 23 years.

Mar 19, 1887,, Rufus HUNT, Clay County,Il Swears he has know soldeir for 22 years and that he served with him from oct 31, 1864 to the 21 day of Oct 1865. and that they are near neighbors "He was sick with some kind of fever i dont recolect what kind of fever and he also taken sick with fevor at Fort Lecacke texes: he was sick some time i dont recolect just how long or what the name of feveor and he taken sore eyes write a way and claiment eyes has has been sore evers since being members of same co and regt and living nearneibhbors to the said soldier wayted on the soldier while he was sick at nashville, Tenn: and also I wated on the claiment while he ws sick at Fort lecacke texes and live near neighbors to the claiment and he continures to suffer with his eyes; and his eyes in in a bade condition."

We have lived on joining formes and we have been veary intiment acquainted ever since and his eyes has growed worse and is growing wours all the time." He says the they are"living neighbors and being with him and see him warring glasses to protect his eyes. The claiment was warring glasses the first time I see him" States that they have known each other for 22 years. Another document says"Over about the first of December 1865 William B Drake come to my house in company with neighber Rufus Hund on Land traid. I saw he was wareing glasses and his eyes was sore and in a bade condition and he traided for the farme cornering with nm land and over a bout March A D 1866 he moved on his plase in a bout one quarter of mile he has bin one of my neighbor up to date and I see Willam B Drak offten that is the reasion that i now the condition of his eyes they seame to be a granulated sore eyes and they are in a greate deale worse conditoin then when I first saw him"

May 27,1892, he filed for an increase in pension due to an atrophied left testicle which he at first nursed at home by making a 'poltces' and for which he sought no medical assistance. This disease occurred as a result of Mumps in 1868.

Dec 7, 1892, WB applied for an increase in his pension. At this time, he stated that" My eyes are so weak, I cant see to do much and in warm weather they inflame if I sweat much. I had mumps in the summer of '79 and it caused atrophy of left testicle. I had chronic diarrhea and piles at Nashville in the sumer of '65 and I have had them ever since. My bowels are caustive and loose bowels at all times. My piles come down some bleed and affect my back. I can not do over one fifth manual labor." The doctor confirmed all of this except for diarrhea.

Oct 16,1895, Wm H. KELSO, Doctor,he again applied for an increase citing the same problems but now including heart flutter and shortness of breath. He claims he can scarely see at all to get around. Additionally he says that he can not ride horse back or lift anything. The doctor finds his eyes in very bad shape, and that his skin is sallow, rough and dry, muscles small, soft and flabby. "He is a farmer by occupation. Palms of hands soft. Heart: we find no murmurs or other evidence of organic disease of the heart."

30. Brittain Drake. b. c. 1729. Purchased land in Edgecombe Co, NC, in 1757 from Francis Parker. In 1763 the same land was conveyed in the jurisdiction of Halifax Co., NC, by Francis Drake to Edmund Drake. Since there is no record of conveyance from Brittain Drake to Francis, it can be assumed that Brittain died without issue, and the land passed to his eldest brother who would have been his heir.

"Richard DRAKE actually went to Chatham Co, NC between Feb 11, 1773 when he sold land in Southampton (Deed Book 4, p.513) and the time he bought land in Chatham Co, on april 3, 1773 (Chatham Co, NC Deed Book A, p. 221)"

"The last record I find of Richard DRAKE in Chatham Co, NC was a deed dated Dec 8, 1786 when he sold 114 acres of land to Roger Griffith(Chatham Co, NC Deed Book D, p. 209)"

[sic]
Until I went over the DRAKE records of Southampton Co, VA and Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash and Chatham Counties, NC several years ago with a fine toot com, the parentage of Richard DRAKE of Union Co, SC, your ancestor, was unproben. The reason for this turned out to be due to an unusual set of circumstances."

As mentioned above your ancestor Richard DRAKE came to Chatham Co, NC in 1773 and sold his last holdings there in 1786 and moved to Union Co, SC. Well, people searching the records for Richard only, just in Chatham Co, NC were unable to prove that he moved for a Richard DRAKE still appeared in the records of Chatham. Just about the time that your ancestor left Chatham Co, NC , Richard DRAKE (b. Aug 22, 1762), son of Tristram DRAKE of Halifax Co, NC andnephew of your ancestor, came to Chatham Co, NC to live. Therefore, a superficial study of DRAKE would never disclose that the Richard DRAKE in Chatham Co, NC Before 1787 was a different person from the Richard DRAKE in that county after 1787. I was able to prove this by getting a copy of Richard DRAKE's Rev. Pension Record and abstracts of all Richard DRAKE deeds recorded in Chatham. The disappearance of the earlier Richard DRAKE and Francis DRAKE from Chatham before 1790 and the appearance in Union Co, SC of men by these names lead me to get copies of thier wills. i was able to identify Francis and Richard from them with the help of the records I had already collected"

3. 'Letter of Dr William Mann'.
"The Richard DRAKE (D. 1759 in Southampton Co, VA) who was the father of Richard DRAKE who d. in Union Co, SC was the son of Richard DRAKE of Isle of Wight and Southampton Co, VA. [sic] This had not been proven until Iclosely studied the DRAKE records in these two counties ad the land grants, because people doing research on Richard DRAKE (d. 1759) had confused him with his father who was of the same name."

"On Nov 13, 1713, a Richard DRAKE was granted land in Isle of Wight, Co, VA and in 1759 a Isle of Wight died in Southampton Co, VA (Southampton Co being formed from Isle of Wight about 1750). Heretofore peope studying the DRAKE genealogy had assumed that they were the same person. That was not the case. The Richard DRAKE of the 1713 grant was Richard DRAKE who married Sarah UNK. The Richard DRAKE who died in 1759 was in the records as Richard DRAKE JR."

"According to my calculations the Richard DRAKE (of the 1713 grant was born about 1674 and last appears in the records in 1757. Richard DRAKE Jr who was doubtlessly his son was born about 1696 and died in 1759.. . . . "

4. Charles E DRAKE, National Genealogical Society Quarterly, '"Drake's pf Isle of Wight County, Virginia: Reconstructing an Immigrant Family from Fragile Clues', TBD, TBD.
p. 20 "Jemima DRAKE, the widow of John appeared before the court and gave her age as about forty three years."(Isle of Wight Deed Book, 1: 128-29) "Typically, in Virginia society of this era, the husband would be some few years her senior." Therefore it would be reasonable to place John's year of birth at about 1650 or, perhaps up to ten years or so years before."

5. Matthew DRAKE is listed in military and land records in 1771-3 and 1780-83. He moved to Edgecombe Co c.1781 and died aroun 1810.

In 1763 the same land was conveyed in the jurisdiction of Halifax Co., NC, by Francis Drake to Edmund Drake. Well, Hi, cousin! (well by marriage and in laws, anyway)
Yes, I know about these folks.
Joseph MINOR was the father-in-law of one of my CLARK ancestor's siblings.
Edmund BRANCH was the father of Joseph's wife, Mary. ( I don't know anything
about a DELOR ?) She was married to DRAKE, first, I suppose, had a son, George,
and maybe more by him and then married Joseph.
They had two daughters, that I know of.. Polly MINOR and Lucy MINOR. Lucy married Henry CLARK,
my Alexander CLARK's half brother. Henry was the son of William and Frances---
CLARK.
He and Polly sell the land that her father left her, in 1805.
Let me do some checking and get back to you tomorrow... Sue

"George Drat. . ., 75, F, March, School teacher, Unknown, Sudden" which means that a George [possibly DRAKE], 75 years old, a school teacher died in March. The F was a continued ditto and may have simply been a mistake, not too many female Georges at that time. His/her place of birth was unknown. So whether this is our grandaddy or not is irrelevant. There is coincidentally, an Elizabeth LASATER, 30, F on page one of the Eastern District.

George DRAKE listed on p. 109 in Chatham County Militia which appears to be in the 4th NC Regiment..
He is #70 on the list and his name is preceded by William LASATER. It is highly unlikely that this is his father-in law who would have been way overage by this time.
He appears to be on the Muster roles of 1814.
In the combined list of pensioners for 1812 he is listed as" DRAKE, George, no pension claim, srv EVANS' NC Mil, BLW#66293-40-50 and 32333-120-55." BLW refers to "Bounty land warrant."

George DRAKE is listed as 43 a Miller and is living smack dab in the middle of William Bennett DRAKE, Mariah DRAKE HARRIS and Mary DRAKE JOHNSON.

John DRAKE was married in TN in 1848 and if this is his older brother it may solve the problem of approx. when and why Elizabeth went to TN. She could have followed her eldest son who got work as a miller sometime in 1840 or so.

I have no idea who Matha is. She is not George's sister who was called Margaret, his mother was Elizabeth, and I can't find any aunt either natural or by marriage named Martha. I doubt that it is Martha HINTON nee DRAKE, who would be an Aunt to the family. She was the daughter of Francis DRAKE, but much older than 75 I believe.

The first date is the license and the second is the marriage. The original is in the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tn.

I am deducing that this is Mariah Drake, sister of William Bennet Drake, because she was the only Mariah listed, the age and the location is right. She would have been 36 when she married this Harris, so she may not have been a sister but rather a sister in law, and Mary H, may have been her daughter. If not, Mary H may have been illegitimate.

Elizabeth, 68 Nash (This is the best match, however as she is still there in 1850, I find it not probable)
we find in this listing.
1male 10 or under, (possibly William Bennett Drake), 1male 15 or under, (possibly John L however he should have been listed as 17 or 18.)
1 female 20 or under(possibly Mariah)
1 female 60 or under (probably Elizabeth.

I am deducing that this is Elizabeth T. Drake, sister of William Bennet Drake, because she was the only Elizabeth T. listed, the age and the location is right.

I am deducing that this is Mary Drake, possible sister or neice of William Bennet Drake, because she was the only Elizabeth T. listed, the age, the location is right and Mariah Drake had married E.G. Drake, two years prior. It may be that Mary is the illegitimate daughter of Mariah or a daughter of a deceased Drake brother. It is highly unlikely that she is the sister of WB Drake as his mother would have had to have been 56 when she was born.

He is not listed in the 1820 census though his will is probated in 1834. There is a Richard in 1830 census. This is due to the confusion as to Richard DRAKE son of Richard DRAKE of Southampton and his nephew, son of Tristam DRAKE who moved to Chatham Co about the same time the former moved to Union Co , SC.

Richard DRAKE'S will which is dated May 8th, 1834 lists Louisa as wife and heirs as Ethelbert DRAKE, Elizabeth AUSBY, Alford DRAKE, William H.DRAKE, Edmund DRAKE and Richard C. DRAKE.

Nathan Wolf
birth: 15 Jan 1811, Kentucky
death: 03 Apr 1886, Hickory Hill Twp, Wayne Co, IL
buried: Bailey Cemetery, Wayne County, IL
Notes: Nathan appears to have been given a land grant around 1835 for
40 acres in Wayne Co, IL. He moved there, where he met and married
Nancy Agnes Womack. Nancy was the daughter of Lewis and Margaret Womack
(I have much more on the Womacks if you need it). Nathan and Nancy
lived there lives on that land, raising eleven children. Nathan and
Nancy's grave is barely legible in Bailey Cemetery. Hal Wolfe (of Mt.
Vernon, IL) holds the original land grant issued to Nathan Wolf, signed
by President Franklin Pierce. My grandfather Wolfe (Charles Bennett
Wolfe, son of Henry A. Wolfe) lived with his grandmother Nancy Womack
Wolf when he was a child. He wrote an interesting essay on life in the
late 1800s (mentioning the old homesite and persons). I will send you a
copy if interested.

John "Jack" Wolf III
I have the same information as you. Sally Copeland appears to have been
a distant cousin of Daniel Boone, and according to family tradition,
told of a time when she sat on his knee. I have information regarding
her lineage as well if you need it.

John Wolf II
Again, we have similar information here. According to the records on
the Orange Co, IN homepage, John II is also likely buried in that
county. I do have slightly different dates regarding births:
Peter, 1775 Mary, 1792
Hannah, 1780 Aethel, 1793
John III, 1785 Elizabeth, 15 Aug 1795
Henry, 18 Oct 1786 Sarah Ann, 1797
Lydia, 02 Oct 1789

John Wolf I
I didn't have anything regarding this guy except his name.

Peter Wolf
I have been told by another researcher (I can't find their e-mail right
now) that Peter was born in Poss, Switzerland. He must have eventually
settled in Shenandoah Co, VA. Whether he was the original Wolf or not,
there were a lot of Wolf's from that area. The farm that he built was
known by family tradition as "The Wolf-Marsh Farm".

As far as my lineage:

Mother: Bonnie Alice Wolfe
b. 25 Dec 1927
d. 05 Oct 1889
buried in Memorial Gardens, Mt. Vernon, IL
spouse: Elmer Hart, Jr.

Gfather: Charles Bennett Wolfe
b. 05 May 1882
d. 22 Feb 1967
buried in Williams Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, IL
spouse: Alice Vickers

GGfather: Henry Alvis "Bruce" Wolfe
b. 11 Dec 1859
d. 07 Feb 1938
buried in Wolfe Cemetery, Wayne Co, IL
spouse: Iona Luella Daisy

GGGfather: Nathan Wolf

Please send more information regarding John A. Wolfe, and anything else
you think I might find interesting. Thanks.
