Other Drakes on the tax list include Daniel, John, Jesse. ...

"Dearborn County was organized in 1803. It included land which is now Switzerland County, Ross Township of Ripley County; the area below Grant's Creek in 1809 became Jefferson County. Ohio County and Switzerland counties were formed about 1810; Ripley County was formed about then."

"In the year 1798 there arrived from Lexington, Ky., Robert and Jesse Drake, with their families. They first settled on Grant's Creek, but in 1800 Robert removed to a point on the river opposite the foot of Laughery Island. Two years afterward he moved to the land now owned by James Clark, on Arnold's Creek, where, in 1803, Mr. Enoch Drake, his son, was born. To the latter gentleman, who is still able to do a day's work at his trade of wagon-making, the author is indebted for notes and incidents of the early times. He now resides in Rising Sun."

"Previous to the admission of Indiana as a State, a number of families had settled within the present limits of the township, among whom can be recalled Jacob Myers, who resided in the southern part of the township, here the hamlet of Aberdeen has since been built. This was somewhat a central point on the road between Aurora and Vevay, and he early arranged his dwelling for one of entertainment and became the early landlord of that region of country. Along the eastern row of sections had settled the Scrantons, Drakes, and Lambkinses. From reference to the land sales treated of above, it will be seen that the first tract of land purchased in the township, was James Curry and Jesse Drake, in 1810. (This was the northeast quarter of Section 2.) Mr Drake moved upon this land in 1810, and was among the first settlers of southern Indiana, having emigrated from Lexington, Ky., in the year 1798, to Grant's Creek; from thence, in 1800, to a point on the Ohio River (Randolph Township, opposite Laughery Island.

"Here he built a cabin, obtaining from the island boards enough to lay the floor and loft, which boards were remnants of a flat-boat, and were pieced by numerous bullet holes. On removing into Cass Township, Mr. Drake for years kept tavern."

JAYNES. -- March 5th, 1880, in Cotton Township, this county, Mrs. Lucretia Jaynes, in the 82d year of her age. Mrs. Jaynes was a daughter of Robert Drake, and was born on Plum Creek, about four miles from Vevay, on the 12th day of May, 1798, and was a sister of Enoch Drake, of Rising Sun, and Dillard Drake, County Commissioner. She was married to a Mr. Newton, and was the mother of Asa Newton and Mrs. Silvers, the wife of William Silvers, and of Robert Newton, who was on the ill-fated Redstone when her boilers were bursted just above Carrollton. After the death of Mr. Newton she was married to John Jaynes."

"LENTZ. -- At his residence in Pleasant township, this county, Tuesday, March 16, 1880, after an illness of one hour, William Lentz, aged 74 years, 2 months and 10 days. Mr. Lentz was a cousin of Mrs. Jaynes, and was born in this county in the year 1803. It is seldom we are called upon to record the death of persons of such advanced years as the two persons above named, that were born and lived to such advanced ages in the same county."

Notes for Enoch Drake:

"ENOCH DRAKE, of Rising Sun, said to be the first white child born in what is now Ohio County, was born August 28, 1803. His parents were Robert and Mary (Pickett) Drake, natives of North Carolina and Maryland respectively. An account of their settlement in this county is given elsewhere in this work. The father died in Switzerland County in 1844, his wife having preceded him three years. Our subject grew up on the farm of his father and in 1829 married Sallie Huston, also a native of this county, born in 1810, a daughter of Christopher and Mary Crawford [Huston], and granddaughter of Col. Crawford of Wyandot fame. With the exception of the decade between 1836 and 1846, Mr. Drake has lived in this county through his long life, residing in Switzerland County during the interval. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Drake have been born eleven children, of whom the following named five are living: Melissa, Delilah, Sarah, Belle, and Allen. Since 1846 Mr. Drake has resided in Rising Sun engaged as a wagon-maker."

The rest is too difficult to read but Benjamin sold the land to Steven Hastings for $500. Robert Drake, surety, signed his mark; Benjamin Drake signed and Elizabeth Drake signed her mark. No 126 "This Indenture made the twenty eighth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty four between John Nelson of the County of Decatur and the State of Indiana, of the first part and Benjamin Drake of the County and State aforesaid of the second part, witnessith that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of forty dollars lawful money of the United States to him in hand paid by the party of the second part the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained sold aliened conveyed and confirmed, and by these present do grant bargain sell alien convey and confirm unto the said party of the second part his heirs and asigns forever. Could this have been the widow of William Lowe whose second marriage was to a Dexter?]

[Tabor Washburn, born 1760, son of Martha (Taber) and Stephen Washburn, Bennington, Vermont. He was on an early Tax List there in 1787. Was there any other connection between him and our Dexter family? None that I've found as of May 23, 2002. There were Dexter's in Vermont and there was an Isaac Dexter there but he came later.]

320 & 321: Complete Record Probate Book B, pg 254 On their application, Jesse DRAKE and Sarah DRAKE were appointed administrators Feb 25, 1834 of the estate of Dillard DRAKE dec'd. Filed in court was an inventory of Dillard's personal property appraised by Samuel BRYAN and James HOWARD which included 2 beegums and bees, a gun and shot pouch and the usual household and farm items of that period. A list of personal property retained by the widow was also here and a sale bill for the remainder. Robert N JAMESON was clerk at the sale.

The adms. petitioned the court to sell his real estate as the personal property was insufficient to pay the debts of the estate. The real estate was lot 62, block 8 in Greensburgh and was appraised by John HAZELRIGG and T.J. MCQUITHEY.

Mahala, Louisa, Juliann, Sarah and Malinda were listed as the minor heirs of Dillard.

Claims were filed and allowed against this estate by George FLETCHER, Daniel LYMAN, Robert ROBINSON and Isaac PLOUGHE. The real estate was purchased by James D COBB and Geroge R MAGEE. These persons owed notes to Dillard's estate:

"F. J. Drake, M. D., of Carthage, is a native of Switzerland County, Ind., born December 10, 1847, being the son of Dillard R. and Almena (Sisson) Drake, who were respectively natives of Ohio and Switzerland counties, Ind., both of English descent. His mother died when he was but three years old, and two years later his father married Mrs. Hevilla Palmer, who was to him a mother during the rest of his minority. He continued to make his homewith his parents until he was twenty-one years of age. At the age of twenty he became a student in Moore's Hill College, and for a period of five years he attended that institution and taught school alternately. His marriage occured April 3, 1873, to Miss Emma J. Isgrigg, who was the daughter of Dr. Nathan Isgrigg, of Moore's Hill, Ind. She was born in that place July 4, 1852. For two years after his marriage, Dr. Drake was employed as salesman in a general store in Vevay, this State. He then moved to Indianapolis, and entered upommn the study of medicine, receiving his instruction from the faculty of the Indiana Medical College. He took his first course of lectures in that institution during the winter of 1876-7. In the spring of 1877, he entered upon his professional labors in Hendricks County, this State. During the winter of 1880-81, hetook a second course of lectures in the Medical College of Indiana, graduating in March of the latter year. In May, 1881, he came to Rush County, and he has since been actively and successfully engaged in his professional labors in Carthage and vacinity. He is the father of two children: Dellceine and Edwin, both of whom are living. Our subject and wife are members of the Friends' Church. In politics, the Doctor is a Republican. He possess a good knowledge of his profession, is a very successful practioner, and though young, he already has a rank among the successful physicians of the county."

"Samuel Drake owned land Hamilton Twp, District 3. He was elected supervisor of roads there on 20 Apr 1854. Found Samuel's will in Will Bk II, p 126, Delaware Co, in Bracken Library Archives and Special Collections. In it he left 1/3 of his rents and profits of the real estate to his beloved wife, Sarah Ann Drake plus $300 and any personal property she wants at the appraisement, the balance paid in money. $50 at Christmas from 1861 until she gets her money. The will has no witness signatures. The marriage license for Samuel and Polly was obtained on 10 January 1845 in Ripley Co IN. On 20 January, Shadrach Hyatt Esquire filed a certificate of marriage, which he stated he performed 12 Jan 1845. See Miller documents file. Alfred Miller was Executor of the estate of Samuel Drake. Jackson Miller joined him in establishing bond on 29 July 1861. They both signed. Same day Alfred swore he would faithfully discharge; Jackson swore he was worth over $800 bond.... The will of Samuel Drake (see Drake documents) says that his wife Sarah Ann Drake shall receive 1/3 of the rents, his profits from the real estate as long as she stays his widow. She gets $300 and all the personal property she wants at the appraisement; the balance to be paid in money $50 before Christmas in 1861; $50 annually until she gets her $300. Sarah Catherine Drake and James Benjamine Drake and Nancy Ann Drake an equal share of estate. Also Alfred Miller appts administrator and guardian of the "the three Children." Wm J Brinson signed, and it looks like he wrote out the document. " Isaac Drake, the oldest person in Starke county, died at the county poor farm at 1:30 Monday morning from the infirmities of age. According to the best information obtainable he was born April 7, 1808, and therefore would have been ninety-nine years old in April. He had been an inmate of the county house for nine or ten months. One son came here yesterday from Benton County and paid the expenses of the old man's funeral, but did not go to the cemetery. A daughter is said to be the wife of a wealthy man and another son or so are said to be in good circumstances, but they allowed the old man to go neglected "Over the hills to the poor house," stay there until he died, and but for the son mentioned, who is a man of sixty-seven years old, the body would have gone to the dissecting table of a medical college. As it was, it was given lonely, friendless interment in Oak Park cemetery yesterday afternoon. Again it is demonstrated that 'Man's inhumanity to man' makes countless millions mourn.' "

"Isaac Drake, said to have been more than 100 years old, died Monday morning at the county infirmary of senility. Without doubt, Mr. Drake was the oldest person in Starke county, if not the oldest in this part of the state. According to a record which was made in 1869, he was born April 7, 1809. This Mr. Drake always insisted was wrong. To some he said he was born in 1808, but to others he insisted that he was born in 1807. It is likely that he was born April 7, 1808, which would make him a little less than 99 years of age at the time of his death. For thirty-six years Mr. Drake lived with his wife, herself 80 years old, on the east side of Bass Lake. Three years ago Mrs. Drake sustained a broken limb, and after her recovery she went to live with a daughter in Arkansas. Last May Mr. Drake was removed to the poor farm. Until last Thursday his health had been quite good. His mental vigor was but slightly impaired and he was a great reader. By that strange process of nature, his eyesight been renewed, and he was able to read without glasses. His old neighbors speak of him as a good citizen and neighbor, honest, frugal and religious. Although given every care at the infirmary, the aged man longed to be gathered to his fathers. Long years had rolled away since his early friends had departed, and--

'The names he loved to hear had been carved for many years on the tomb.' He would often speak of himself and say that he hoped it would not be long until the Lord would call him home. Pathetic, indeed, was the passing of this aged man whose years had virtually reached the century mark. Life had lost all its charm for him and the voice he longed most to hear was that of his Master calling him to that serener sphere. Until a few years ago, Mr. Drake earned his own living and with his aged wife kept house at their farm. So far as his neighbors knew he did not use whiskey or tobacco, but he was regular in his habits and a devout Christian. Three sons and a daughter survive him. The oldest, a son, is past seventy years of age."

OBITUARY

"Mrs. Mahala Dillier, who has been sick for nearly four months, passed away on Wednesday evening at eight o'clock. She was the widow of the late Joseph Dillier, who died in our city some eight years ago. Mrs. Dillier was 59 years old, and a native of our town-a daughter of Dillard Drake, whose widow still lives, and who followed the last of her family to the grave on Thursday. The names of Sarah, Lin and Mrs. Talbott (who have long since passed away) were familiar to many of us 25 years ago. Mrs. Dillier was a most exemplary woman and devoted to her family, which was fully appreciated by them, as was shown in their untiring watchfulness in her protracted illness."

DEATH OF HENRY DRAKE.

An Oklahoma Pioneer Passes Away at

His Home in This City.

" Henry D. Drake died at his home,

401 Perkins street, yesterday afternoon

at 4 O'clock, after a long and lingering

illness from consumption. The de-

ceased was born in Muncie, Indiana,

in 1844 and came to Oklahoma with

his wife and four children shortly

after the opening, when Mr. Drake en-

gaged in business until stricken by the

dread disease which caused his untime-

ly demise. The deceased was an ar-

dent member of the Masonic order and

also the Woodman of the World. He

was a good businessman, a christian,

a kind and indulgent father and a lov-

ing husband. His friends were legion

and he commanded the respect and es-

teem of all who knew him. The bereav-

ed wife and children have the heartfelt

sympathy of all in their sore troubles.

The funeral will take place this evening

at five o'clock from the late house of the

ceased and will be conducted by the

Masons and Woodmen of the World."

DEATH OF HENRY DRAKE.

An Oklahoma Pioneer Passes Away at

His Home in This City.

" Henry D. Drake died at his home,

401 Perkins street, yesterday afternoon

at 4 O'clock, after a long and lingering

illness from consumption. The de-

ceased was born in Muncie, Indiana,

in 1844 and came to Oklahoma with

his wife and four children shortly

after the opening, when Mr. Drake en-

gaged in business until stricken by the

dread disease which caused his untime-

ly demise. The deceased was an ar-

dent member of the Masonic order and

also the Woodman of the World. He

was a good businessman, a christian,

a kind and indulgent father and a lov-

ing husband. His friends were legion

and he commanded the respect and es-

teem of all who knew him. The bereav-

ed wife and children have the heartfelt

sympathy of all in their sore troubles.

The funeral will take place this evening

at five o'clock from the late house of the

ceased and will be conducted by the

Masons and Woodmen of the World."

In 1953, Rena lived with her son Ernest (Connie) and his wife Jennie in Sioux Falls, South Dekota. She was moved to Luthern Old People's Home in 1956 and died there later that year of bronchial phenomia, conjestive heart failure and arterio ceclerosis.

Notes for Herbert Charles Constable:

Herb and Rena lived on his father's farm in Indiana until Richard retired in 1888. Herb bought a fam in Dewald Township, Nobles County, Minnesota and moved his family there the following Spring. In 1898, he bought an interest in the Bedford general store in Rushmore. In 1900, he and Solatial Bedford became partners in the store and the name was changed to "H. C. Constable & CO." Herb became a stock holder in the Rushmore State Bank in 1903. The safe in his store being the only safe in town, was used to hold the money for the bank until a new safe was purchased especially for the bank's purposes. The Constables moved to a house just north of the schoolhouse in Rushmore in 1920. Herb was the Director of the First State Bank of Rushmore in 1929. By 1929, his health was declining and Ernest moved home to help run the store. Herb died 27 December 1934 of chronic myocarotis of the heart. He also suffered from cholecysitis and chronic arthritis. He was buried in Sunset cemetary. The store was sold three years later and his estate was finally settled.
