Other Drakes on the tax list include Daniel, John, Jesse. ...

"Dearborn County was organized in 1803. It included land which is now Switzerland County, Ross Township of Ripley County; the area below Grant's Creek in 1809 became Jefferson County. Ohio County and Switzerland counties were formed about 1810; Ripley County was formed about then."

"In the year 1798 there arrived from Lexington, Ky., Robert and Jesse Drake, with their families. They first settled on Grant's Creek, but in 1800 Robert removed to a point on the river opposite the foot of Laughery Island. Two years afterward he moved to the land now owned by James Clark, on Arnold's Creek, where, in 1803, Mr. Enoch Drake, his son, was born. To the latter gentleman, who is still able to do a day's work at his trade of wagon-making, the author is indebted for notes and incidents of the early times. He now resides in Rising Sun."

"Previous to the admission of Indiana as a State, a number of families had settled within the present limits of the township, among whom can be recalled Jacob Myers, who resided in the southern part of the township, here the hamlet of Aberdeen has since been built. This was somewhat a central point on the road between Aurora and Vevay, and he early arranged his dwelling for one of entertainment and became the early landlord of that region of country. Along the eastern row of sections had settled the Scrantons, Drakes, and Lambkinses. From reference to the land sales treated of above, it will be seen that the first tract of land purchased in the township, was James Curry and Jesse Drake, in 1810. (This was the northeast quarter of Section 2.) Mr Drake moved upon this land in 1810, and was among the first settlers of southern Indiana, having emigrated from Lexington, Ky., in the year 1798, to Grant's Creek; from thence, in 1800, to a point on the Ohio River (Randolph Township, opposite Laughery Island.

"Here he built a cabin, obtaining from the island boards enough to lay the floor and loft, which boards were remnants of a flat-boat, and were pieced by numerous bullet holes. On removing into Cass Township, Mr. Drake for years kept tavern."

JAYNES. -- March 5th, 1880, in Cotton Township, this county, Mrs. Lucretia Jaynes, in the 82d year of her age. Mrs. Jaynes was a daughter of Robert Drake, and was born on Plum Creek, about four miles from Vevay, on the 12th day of May, 1798, and was a sister of Enoch Drake, of Rising Sun, and Dillard Drake, County Commissioner. She was married to a Mr. Newton, and was the mother of Asa Newton and Mrs. Silvers, the wife of William Silvers, and of Robert Newton, who was on the ill-fated Redstone when her boilers were bursted just above Carrollton. After the death of Mr. Newton she was married to John Jaynes."

"LENTZ. -- At his residence in Pleasant township, this county, Tuesday, March 16, 1880, after an illness of one hour, William Lentz, aged 74 years, 2 months and 10 days. Mr. Lentz was a cousin of Mrs. Jaynes, and was born in this county in the year 1803. It is seldom we are called upon to record the death of persons of such advanced years as the two persons above named, that were born and lived to such advanced ages in the same county."

Notes for Enoch Drake:

"ENOCH DRAKE, of Rising Sun, said to be the first white child born in what is now Ohio County, was born August 28, 1803. His parents were Robert and Mary (Pickett) Drake, natives of North Carolina and Maryland respectively. An account of their settlement in this county is given elsewhere in this work. The father died in Switzerland County in 1844, his wife having preceded him three years. Our subject grew up on the farm of his father and in 1829 married Sallie Huston, also a native of this county, born in 1810, a daughter of Christopher and Mary Crawford [Huston], and granddaughter of Col. Crawford of Wyandot fame. With the exception of the decade between 1836 and 1846, Mr. Drake has lived in this county through his long life, residing in Switzerland County during the interval. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Drake have been born eleven children, of whom the following named five are living: Melissa, Delilah, Sarah, Belle, and Allen. Since 1846 Mr. Drake has resided in Rising Sun engaged as a wagon-maker."

Drake, Benjamin and Elizabeth sold "... the south east quarter of section thirty six [36] in township four [4] in the ... on a Range west of meridian line ...... from the mouth of the Great miami River of the Canal district [?] ..." The rest is too difficult to read but Benjamin sold the land to Steven Hastings for $500. Robert Drake, surety, signed his mark; Benjamin Drake signed and Elizabeth Drake signed her mark. [This is the fist tangible connection between Robert and Benjamin.] I could not determine the number of acres involved. [Barb]

No 126 "This Indenture made the twenty eighth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty four between John Nelson of the County of Decatur and the State of Indiana, of the first part and Benjamin Drake of the County and State aforesaid of the second part, witnessith that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of forty dollars lawful money of the United States to him in hand paid by the party of the second part the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained sold aliened conveyed and confirmed, and by these present do grant bargain sell alien convey and confirm unto the said party of the second part his heirs and asigns forever. Could this have been the widow of William Lowe whose second marriage was to a Dexter?]

[Tabor Washburn, born 1760, son of Martha (Taber) and Stephen Washburn, Bennington, Vermont. He was on an early Tax List there in 1787. Was there any other connection between him and our Dexter family? None that I've found as of May 23, 2002. There were Dexter's in Vermont and there was an Isaac Dexter there but he came later.]

314: Complete Record Probate Book B, pg 109 Benjamin DRAKE and James GAGEBY were appointed administrators of the

estate of Robert CHURCH when the original administrator could not give enough security to cover the worth of Robert's real estate. Dillard DRAKE and Isaac PLOUGHE were their securities. Aug 1833.

320 & 321: Complete Record Probate Book B, pg 254 On their application, Jesse DRAKE and Sarah DRAKE were appointed administrators Feb 25, 1834 of the estate of Dillard DRAKE dec'd. Filed in court was an inventory of Dillard's personal property appraised by Samuel BRYAN and James HOWARD which included 2 beegums and bees, a gun and shot pouch and the usual household and farm items of that period. A list of personal property retained by the widow was also here and a sale bill for the remainder. Robert N JAMESON was clerk at the sale.

The adms. petitioned the court to sell his real estate as the personal property was insufficient to pay the debts of the estate. The real estate was lot 62, block 8 in Greensburgh and was appraised by John HAZELRIGG and T.J. MCQUITHEY.

Mahala, Louisa, Juliann, Sarah and Malinda were listed as the minor heirs of Dillard.

Claims were filed and allowed against this estate by George FLETCHER, Daniel LYMAN, Robert ROBINSON and Isaac PLOUGHE. The real estate was purchased by James D COBB and Geroge R MAGEE. These persons owed notes to Dillard's estate:
