Notes for CHARLES DRAKE:

"He is a shadowy figure, first revealed to me by my father, who thought he existed, and thought that he went to the Boston area or to Ontario. This was back in 1955, when my interest in family was well satisfied by "what my father told me". And well might be, too, for since I have become a little more genealogy conscious, I have not found an error in what Dad gave me. About twenty-five years ago, while going through some land records I found reference to a Charles Drake being in P.E.I. in the 1840's - no more than that. When I had the Mormon Index searched I hoped to find a Charles whose dates and parents might be plausible, but came up empty. Doesn't mean he did not exist."

Marriage Notes for GEORGE DRAKE and ELMIRA CLARKE:

George and Elmira were neighbors so knew each other probably most of their lives. After their marriage in 1888 they lived and farmed on Lot 49, Pownal Bay P.E.I. for a year or so, then settled on a farm at Mt. Mellick P.E.I. Lois Chandler, who from the age of 16 helped with baby Harry and Gordon, stayed on as helper for Elmira with the housework and cooking until 1946. Lois died in Saskatoon Saskatchewan in 1967 at the age of 90. After Gordon was born, Elmira was involved in an elevator accident at the hospital that crashed to the ground and left her a semi-invalid from that time on.

George moved from Mt. Mellick to Strasbourg, Saskatchewan in the spring of 1906 until 1918. Together with son Harry and his wife Margaret, they operated a John Deere Implement business. They then moved to Beatty, Saskatchewan where they farmed and then to North Battleford, Saskatchewan where they had another John Deere Outlet with George and Harry in business together.

Then in 1925 George bought 8 acres just south of Saskatoon and he built a fox ranch. All the buildings were very well built and kept very tidy. He also invented many things he used on the fox ranch, which other fox ranchers used.

At the age of 76 George sold "the Ranch" to his grandson Willard and retired, moving to a home in Saskatoon.

George loved cars and had one of the first with lamps you had to light. The story is told that when he went downtown in the "Buick" he would drive on the street-car tracks.

vi. JOHN RICHARD DRAKE, b. February 9, 1871, Lot 49, Pownal, P.E.I.; d. May 5, 1943, Dilke, Saskatchewan; m. SUSANNAH JANE DRAKE, daughter of Enoch Drake and Mary Howard, March 16, 1898, Home of Enoch Drake, Cornwall, P.E.I.; b. October 7, 1873, Lot 32, Meadow Bank, P.E.I.; d. July 6, 1963, Dilke, Saskatchewan.

Notes for JOHN RICHARD DRAKE:

In 1923 John got his leg caught under the bull wheel of the binder. Marg drove the car to Keddleston, and took her Father to Regina by train. It saved his life but the leg could not be saved. John bought land from Nat Gay in Saskatchewan.

JOHN RICHARD DRAKE

The funeral service for the late John Richard Drake took place at the Kedleston United Church Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Mr Gordon Wanless officiated. Pallbearers were George Bradley, C. Bradley, A. Wilke, J. Coles, W. Tindall and B. Foxon. Mr Drake was born in 1871 at Waterside, near Pownal, Prince Edward Island. In 1898 he married Miss Susannah Jane Drake at Cornwall, P.E.I. The family lived at Waterside untill 1911. Early that spring it joined George Drake at Strasbourg, Sask., and in the fall of the same year located on the farm three miles north west of Kedleston, which is still the family home. Beside Mrs. Drake three children survive: Russell and Mary at Kedleston and Mrs. W. Wheatley, Liberty. Mr.George Drake, a brother, lives in Saskatoon. Mr Drake was a member of the United Church and for some time was superintendent of the Sunday School at Kedleston. He was secretary and member of the local school board for about twenty-five years and served as the secretary !

for the local telephone company for about the same length of time. He has been in indifferent health for the past three years, although untill the past two weeks he was up and about. Another page in the history of Kedleston is written with the passing of a pioneer, who made his contribution to its development, to its gradual change from the unsettled prarie into an organized community. The West is not the country for weaklings or those who are afraid of hard work, who lack courage and perseverance. Men who made the West are those who stick to it, through thick and thin, through bad times and good times, through discouragements and drouths.

Wedding announcement from The Guardian Newspaper 1898.

HEART HARVEST - A very interesting event took place last evening, the 16th inst, at the residence of Mr Enoch Drake, Cornwall, when their only daughter Janie Drake, was united in wedlock to Mr John R Drake of Pownal. The bride was supported by Miss Ella Howard, of Cornwall, and Mr Wm Lane was best man for the groom. The bride was dressed in white Swiss muslin and looked beautiful. The ceremony was performed by Rev Mr Dawson, of Cornwall, assisted by Rev. W. J. Howard, of Pownal. The immediate relatives of the contracting parties were present, forming a numerous and happy party. After supper Dr Taylor, of Charlottetown, proposed the health of the bride and groom with which he coupled the name of Rev Mr Dawson who responded. The evening was enlivened with music, singing and games and a crowd of the Cornwall youths added to the interest by a rousing chivarie which, however, was conducted in a very orderly and respectable manner. The GUARDIAN joins with Mr and Mrs Drake's many friends in tendering congratulations.

Notes for MARY HOWARD:

MRS. ENOCH DRAKE

On July 25th, Cornwall, P.E.I., experienced a deep sense of loss in the death of Mrs. Enoch Drake, at the age of seventy-five years. Deceased had been in failing health for some months due to complications following pneumonia.

Mrs. Drake (nee Mary Howard) was united in marriage to Mr. Enoch Drake on February 15th, 1866. The children of the marriage were; John, living in Keddleston, Sask,; James Howard, living at home with his widowed mother, the father having died on Nov. 12, 1904, and Susannah Jane, also residing in Keddleston, Sask.

The deceased joined the Methodist church at an early age. Her life, noted for simplicity of faith and transparency of character, was a benediction to many people; whilst her home, characterized for its Christian hospitality, was a shelter to friend and stranger alike. Her many mourners and loved ones, whilst realizing that her translation has narrowed for them, life's circle, yet has widened a friendship in the skies; for on such saints as Mrs. Drake God's mantle of glory eternally falls.

After their marriage they moved to Kingston, P.E.I., from there coming to Kedleston district in the spring of 1911 and settling on a farm two and a half miles north of the village. Surviving are one daughter, Gladys Marie, one brother, James of Cornwall, P.E.I. and one sister, Mrs. J.R. Drake of Kedleston. Mr. Drake has served as elder in the Kedleston church for many years. We knew him best for his capacity for work, for his unwillingness to do anyone harm and for little acts of kindness such as pride in keeping the new church neat and warm and helping a neighbor in need. We mourn the loss of an old-timer in our district and extend our sympathy to the bereaved.

Bradley, A. Wilke, J.
